Strong ties to family and connection with your local community will do x more than stockpiling ammo. It's self evident but lost on so many.

I'll also add hunting skills will be largely be useless, read about the great recession and how within weeks white tail deer were nearly extinct and had to be introduced back into many reigons.

Shit does not simply hit the fan. Contrary to popular belief, complexity adds resilience to societies. Which is why a weather event here that kills 20 people is news, while an earthquake could kill 250,000 in Haiti before it was all said and done. I see SHTF and related disaster-porn as possible, but not at all probable. Let alone likely.

Stockpiling is a waste of time for when "shit hits the fan." You know why? People like me are going to take it from you. People like me who know their way around the outdoors and around a rifle, and not just shooting it but camouflage, cover, concealment, tracking, ambush etc. People who have been trained to look for things that are out of place. People who have no problem sitting in one spot for 24 hours until you pop your head out of your hiding spot and then following you as you travel from your stockpile to your vehicle or your living area or your water source or your sanitary area. Everything you have makes you a target.

If you want to be ready for when shit goes south quickly, you should have a pack, a harness and a weapon that you are brilliant in the basics with along with 2-3 days worth of food. Then you should have 2 or 3 more setups because you won't make it alone and the idiots you trust enough to take along won't be prepared. Then you get the fuck out of dodge until things calm down a bit and some semblance of natural order has been established. If you can't carry it on your body, you don't need it. Far more important, as you said, is the ability to procure clean water, food and shelter on your own without the aid of any industrial processes.

The people who will find success when society collapses are those who readily accept that with the death of society comes the death of societal constraints. I hate to reference television, but think your Daryl's and Merl's from the first season of "The Walking Dead." Think the "claimed" gang. All-male groups with a mutual understanding that all that matters now is what you can take and the willingness to take it. If you can't transition seamlessly into this mindset, you won't survive the collapse of society.

Venezuela? Some responses to this post simply blame Venezuela's problems on socialism, case closed. But it's far more complicated than that. It's about corruption, government paralysis, lawless attempts by the opposition to effect regime change, the collapse of the price of oil, an undiversified economy, international sanctions (including by the U.S.), and more. Far from actual socialism, private assets in Venezuela actually have risen in the past 15 years, from 65 to 71 percent, as money and corruption scoop up public assets (a decidedly right-wing activity).

It amuses me that, after Trump was elected president, the bottom fell out of the U.S. prepper market. Prepping is largely a lily-white right-wing phenomenon, so white right-wingers had no doubt that a black president would destroy the country. When Trump was elected, white right-wingers felt safe again.

There is a good object lesson here on the dangers of ideology. Rational people realize that, under Obama, the American economy stabilized after the financial crisis of the Bush-Cheney years. Under Trump, the dangers have risen dramatically, largely because of corruption and incompetence. If the U.S. faces any kind of crisis, neither the White House nor the Congress will be able to execute a rational and effective response. The dreaded "Deep State" would be our only hope.

Most rational preppers would say that, though threats related to government (corruption, incompetence, paralysis) have risen sharply under Trump, other types of threat are continuous — for example, the threat of pandemic or the loss of the power grid. Though it's also true that the incompetence of the Trump administration would impede government's ability to respond effectively to pandemic or loss of the power grid. It's also perfectly clear now that Russia is working hard, as clandestinely as possible, to destabilize American politics. If the Russians want to go after our economy as well, there are a thousand things they could do. Where Russia is involved, we can expect the Trump administration's response to be irrational and ineffective, if not downright cooperative, since there are ideologues close to Trump who admire (and consort with) Russia and Putin and who make no secret of wanting turmoil and chaos.

In short, only a fool would feel safe in today's world. I'm a liberal prepper. Though everyone needs emergency supplies, the focus of right-wing preppers on guns and private fortresses is shortsighted. You can't shoot or hoard your way out of a long-term crisis. The people who survive will be those who are organized and productive and who have access to land, tools, and infrastructure. Survival and subsistence require cooperation, diversification, and community — always has, always will.
