It's a decent episode with a female guest who's rational enough to realize that women's life choices have more to do with the pay gap than discrimination. On the other hand, this info has been floating around for years now. Feminists don't care about facts, they just want to further the female supremacist agenda.

Any time I've mentioned the true reasons behind the pay gap (you get paid the same for the same job, men and women tend to choose different jobs) girls always switch to the "yeah but patriarchal society discouraged them from STEM etc." It's all bullshit because they all chose sociology or psychology, they easily could have chosen engineering but instead like to blame it on men.

At this point, only a bitchmade, pussy ass lame would argue that the pay gap is because they're women. If that was the case, more women would be hired in favor of men - to fit society's anti-woman agenda. An agenda that doesn't even exist.

Wasted all this time writing out a post for this only to find that you'd posted this a couple days ago already. I'm going to copy my summary here just so it didn't all go to waste:

In this interview with Harvard professor of economics Claudia Goldin on the Freakonomics podcast, she debunks the commonly held notion that women make 77 cents on the dollar for the same job.

"If you take women who don’t have caregiving obligations, they’re almost equal with men. It’s somewhere in the 95 percent range. But when women then have children, or again are caring for their own parents or other sick family members who need care, then they need to work differently. They need to work flexibly, and often go part-time. They often get less-good assignments because their bosses think that they’re not going to want work that allows them to travel, or they’re not going to be able to stay up all night, or whatever it is. And so then you start — if you’re working part-time, you don’t get the same raises. And if you’re working flexibly your boss very typically thinks that you’re not that committed to your career, so you don’t get promoted."

To summarize: men and women make nearly the same amount of money until women have kids, after which pay diverges. This can be attributed to the fact that women tend to be the primary care caregivers for their kids, and thus place a premium on temporal flexibility while also being increasingly likely to work part-time. This naturally leads to a pay cut and less promotions.

Remember, the statistics used to calculate that 77 cents on the dollar statistics still consider a male lawyer with 10 years of experience at a big law firm as equivalent to a female lawyer with 10 years of experience who quit that job at that same job after 6 years to get a job at a less demanding firm with more flexible hours but less money.

"the gender wage gaps, when you correct for the stuff you can correct for in the Census, you find that the biggest wage gaps are in the corporate, the financial sectors, also law, and the health occupations in which there is a high fraction of ownership, of self-employment — so the podiatrists, for example, the chiropractors. So, the ones that have the smallest difference between male and female earnings with these corrections are the technology occupations and the science occupations and the health occupations where there is a small degree of self-employment — as is true today for, for example, pharmacists."

Not surprisingly, the highest paying professions with the largest gender pay gaps are the corporate fields (eg. finance, law) because they tend to have the least temporal flexibility. On the other hand, science and technology have the smallest pay gaps

Anyways this isn't really new information to anyone here, but it's nice to see a mainstream economist podcast debunking this myth that gets tossed around way too much (including by our president).

I dont there is anything new in that podcast, as the wage gap myth has been thoroughly rebutted countless times...hell Thomas Sowell was rebutting it decades go. Doesnt change anything though, the same people will continue to parrot it ad nauseum with no idea what they are talking about.

This was a great episode, as are many of them. I like the way that whilst these guys come across as mostly BP in terms of personality, the cold rationality of the arguments breaks through the idealistic nonsense.

While it sounds cliche, the "wage gap" is an area where you can't help women without also helping men. Women make those choices to go into lower paying professions because society allows it. For men, you are only allowed to pursue a career that will make good money.

Honestly, women are responsible for the wage gap far more than men. If women stopped rewarding men for having money and punishing those without, things would balance out very quickly.

Women are paid (by a man, by child support, by a husband, by the state) to raise children.

Then they claim they are paid less over their lifetimes, not counting all the income they received while raising children.

Men on the other hand... pay handsomely for the 'privelege' of procreation - through tax, through child support, through supporting for their familes. And this is also not taken into account when talking about pay gaps.

So when we talk about female pay, let's talk about female income. And when we talk about male pay, let's talk about how much of that goes on a "man tax" that supports women.
