Bipolar woman here. From experience, men are far less likely to seek help and comply with treatment for mental illness than women. That’s why being in a relationship with a mentally ill man is so exhausting. If they make it to a doctor, they get prescribed meds, maybe finish the bottle, then never refill them because they feel better at the time. Men expect you to stay in shape and be constantly happy, and will make comments reminding you to take your ‘happy pills’, yet they won’t take responsibility for their own health. They think you’re harpy or downright bitchy for refusing to walk on eggshells around them so you don’t set them off... which can get abusive real quick.
If a man discloses that he has a mental illness I expect full compliance with a prescribed professional treatment plan before continuing the relationship. I expect men to demand the same from me.
It is far better to be single than tied to a non-compliant, mentally ill person.
