Make sure you like it and it pays well. Computer sciences pays well and you like it so go for it.

For me, I think your question misses the mark for a bit. You want a career to increase your value? To what end? "High DHV" seems too generic. You can be King of the Janitors and end up using that as a high DHV.

I would pick what you are looking in a career first, then go from there. "I want to make money." "I want to be influential." "I want to be a position to help others." "I want to be in a very high skill environment." Any of those and many more can be a good place to start.

On a side note, do yourself a favor and consider money heavily. Money may not buy happiness, but you don't see many people crying while riding jetskis. At least when you have to get out because you hate it, you'll have tons of money.

By the time you're entering college, if you haven't figured this out, do yourself a huge favor and go work construction, on an oil rig, insulation, anything low skill, long hours, hard labor. Make money while you are "figuring yourself out" instead of stacking up student loans while you switch from major to major.

You can make money while gaining skill. 3-4 years as an apprentice and you'll have your tools, no debt, a little money, and a lot of skill. And they'll find you someone to apprentice under if you don't find one you like.

What you're doing is fine and the other users are saying the truth. But I'm guessing you want more than that.

Ok, lemme give you a potential draw-back of going into that field:

Women will prejudge you. Based on your career, they'll try to jam you into a box they've set up in their minds. A dentist who makes 100k+ a year will tend to be categorized as a beta-provider. If he tries to flirt and get sexual with her, she'll shame him and deny his advances.

Similarly, if you've got a high-paying job in computer sciences, you might get labelled the same way, especially since this major has a "nerd" stigma attached to it.

A homeless crack-addict will have an easier time banging sluts and ONS, is basically what I'm saying.

I don't think there is any thing that is a DHV as much as owning whatever it is you decide to do.

Want to do CS? Do it up. Be the best coder you can be and act like you're the best, your work is valuable, your time is valuable, and your dick is valuable. Don't go hanging your head and sheepishly answer "oh I'm just a programmer" when someone asks you what you do.

I also read the other day something that rang true "whatever you find yourself doing when you procrastinate, that may be what you should be doing"

or something to that affect.

I know a plumber who makes 500k. Don't just choose a career that other people and society value. Choose something that [1] you'll be very successful in and [2] isn't going away anytime soon.

Computer science fits both of those requirements. It's also one of the most meritocratic fields. You can actually start working on your career now. If you're a good enough programmer, send a resume to local businesses around the area. You should have some sort of website or github that has your work and demonstrates your skill level. If you aren't good enough, start programming now.

Lastly, networking > everything. Why do you think that plumber makes 500k? Is he the world's most skilled plumber? Or does he decent work and is very skilled at meeting people and getting contracts? Networking is what leads to a 120k starting salary vs a 60k one. While you're young, people care and want to help you out. Get an internship, meet and impress people, and as you get better you'll get more contacts.

Try infantry officer. You'll have a blast, get manned up a bit, hang out with great guys and learn to handle yourself in front of troops. If you don't want to make a career out of it, get out after five years and do something else.

If you really have a good brain then look into some fields that require STEM degrees. Doctors, Engineers, Chemistry of various types, etc...

If you aren't that smart or prefer to work with your hands consider picking up a skilled trade. It's especially good if you pick up one that has licenses required to ply your trade like plumber, electrician, gas fitter, etc.. but skills like welding, carpentry and drywall and painting never hurt either.

First of all you don't need a degree to be a developer or engineer, you just need skills and a portfolio. Second, if you want social status then you are barking up the wrong tree. Wealth, power, prestige and an official title ( like Doctor, Professor, CEO, etc) are what you should be looking at. Search indeed.com for "developer, $200000" to see how far IT can get you, and plan accordingly.
