Firstly, nice.

Probably could have asked for her number after you exchanged names, or quickly after she got her cake.

Also, as eye-opening as that piece of trivia was, I can guarantee you that she did not care to hear about your great grandfather.

Probably could have just said something along the lines of "that explains the eyes" when she said she was Iraqi, rather than drop unnecessary info.

1)Make compliments about a non-physical feature. Hot women know they're good looking. And all women that are bangable get complimented constantly. You have to put yourself in the shoes of a girl with a pretty face and big tits. All the attention from texts, calls, and social media. All the men that approach her, flirting, mentioning how good she looks. She gets that all the time. You're not special. Don't mix yourself in that crowd.

2) Always ask questions to reveal more information (indirect at first, then switch to direct when the objections come). The more info you have, the better you can construct your pitch in a way that appeals to her and eliminates objections. You may even find later in the conversation that she was never interested or it wont work out for some reason and cut your losses.

The second she got the cake, you should have stopped that unnecessary family tree statement and reverted to "oh what's the cake for?". From there you'd have something extra to work with and buys you more time. You may find she has an extra minute to spare. After all, if she wasn't interested in speaking, she wouldn't have said something to you 15 seconds after you left. Gotta read into those nonverbals.

Good job. Don't listen to the people who says "dont compliment" on the opener. The opener is just that - an opener. 70-80% of communication is your body language and tonality, the opener is just to get the attention and start the convo. It's funny that you walked away after the opener and actually let her chase you, I don't think you intentionally did that. My recommendation would be to close with a specific idea of a date "Cool! Maybe I can make your day again or maybe you can make mine - coffee on tuesday?" and nrclose from there. Again, good job.

Disagree with comments about "don't compliment."

Women love when dudes who approach with a compliment like yours - as long as she thinks the guy is hot and he does it with confidence (complimenting like a chad and not a simp).

You shouldn't have walked away in the first place. But her coming back to continue the conversation is a good sign. When you asked for her name, you should've held your hand out to shake, and held her hand for a lot longer than you think (like 10 seconds more). Then said something like, "We should grab a drink sometime" (or grab a drink that night if you want to go for full sexual intention) and ask for her number. Shouldn't have brought up the family stuff.

Nice day-time approach. Even without getting her number, you're levels above the average guy.

Nice positive cold approach. The only thing you forgot was the close. Sometimes it can be easy to forget there's actually an objective to cold approaching and that's to close and get contact info. I've found that even women who are interested might be hesitant to give their personal phone number to a stranger they just met so I went to asking for their Snap or IG instead.

Make sure you get the number next time. I also wouldn't open with something about her looks but at least you initiated which is the hardest thing to do. Keep doing it often and it gets easy after five or so tries. At this point I prefer it to approaching at clubs/frats and I'm in college.

That was a great first impression and she definitely showed intrest back, only thing is you DIDN'T GET HER NUMBER. That question is quite literally ingrained in my thoughts when cold approaching, but atleast you got an invaluable experience that gives you confidence in the future
