I am a professional chef and while watching people prepare food is entertaining and sometimes also educating I actually recommend you to buy books and learn the basics first.

You can then use youtube pretty well in order to watch how to do specific things, like i.e. deboning a whole chicken for a gallantine, or how to trim certain pieces of meat.

Start with french cuisine. Once you have understood how things are connected you'll actually understand everything else.

If you want something simple and entertaining for the start I'd choose Anthony Bourdaine's Les Halles Cookbook. It's amusingly written and the recipes are fairly easy and they are all legit.

Then there is Paul Bocus. Living legend with three long-term girlfriends.

And of course you want to have Escoffier at your home. Doesn't get much more classic than that.

If you want to get a sense of what drives a top notch chef, watch In Search of Perfection by Heston Blumethal. Very very good stuff.

And finally, if you want to learn something about culinary history I highly highly recommend Heat: An Amateur's Adventures as Kitchen Slave, Line Cook, Pasta-Maker, and Apprentice to a Dante-Quoting Butcher in Tuscany and to learn about our lifes as a chef you need to read the (admittedly exaggerated) autobiographicly Kitchen Confidential by Bourdain.

All this provided, you won't learn cooking without actually doing it.

Edit: Depending on your budget, I also heavily recommend Alain Ducasse's Grand Livre de Cuisine.

If you want to learn about different cultures/styles of cooking I recommend watching anything Anthony Bourdain, he's got good shows. If you actually want to cultivate the skill of cooking just look up recipes (I like Alton Brown but who gives a fuk, pick whoever) and try making them.

Practice makes perfect, find dishes you enjoy and get really good at making those, then make small adjustments to suit your own palate. Pay attention to what works better, and always try and perfect the craft, do experiments. Have fun with it and don't do it to impress girls. Do it because if you're a good cook you can probably make delicious, healthy meals effortlessly and at a low cost to yourself, and that's dope.

FitMenCook is my favorite. FoodWishes is great as well but not as health conscious as I'd like. They're both youtube channels.

Huge SMV boost. My FB and Instagram are basically food post ads for my dick. Several dating sites have you hooked up to Instagram and girls who look through there see some well-presented food.

I second the book recommendation. 2 stand out, Jaques Pepin's New Complete Techniques and Bittman's How to Cook Everything. Look for books and sites that teach you knife skills and how to make basic sauces.

At first I did recipes. Now I just modify parts of recipes and bash them together. I do the same thing several times to tweak it. I write my own recipes now. Save them in my phone. Now people ask me to E-mail the recipe for things to them.

It truly is an art. You do want to learn to match ingredients and flavors.

Also, write down what you learn in a book or in files on your phone. I keep it on the phone so I can send them to people who ask and I know what I need to get at the store to make what I want.

What I've found with cooking is that its a fucking art dude.

There's no recepies or bullshit learning to be done. Just get a basic knowledge on how to match ingredients and how to treat them on youtube. I recommend foodtube by Jamie Oliver. And then just get at it in the kitchen, pour your fucking soul in to the food.

Honestly its all about love to the ingredients and the art of cooking that makes it good.

Thats why programmers and IT people usualy are REALLY bad at cooking, but they make awesome cakes and desertes. Becaus they're static, they follow a specific line of action and remain within the accepted fraims of the recepie.

Cooking is about exploring and experementing!

learn to cook a steak

While cooking shows are a great source of inspiration and technique, you just need to jump in and get some hands on experience but remember practice makes perfect.
