it's more important to look good without clothes on than with.

if you look like shit, nice clothes won't make much of a difference.. lipstick on a pig sorta thing

There's a difference between dressing nicer and dressing better. High quality, fitted t-shirt and jeans beats an off-the-rack suit. But this is something you already mentioned.

Two potential reasons:

More hood/thuggish look that's different and more appealing to women than the standard button down BS every dude wears to the bar.
Boots give you an extra bump in height, and the baggy clothes furthers the impression of size.

I've had the same experience, only regarding my hair. Some of the hardest flirtation sessions have happened with 9/10 women when I had Einstein style hair. Still scratching my head at what was going on.

When you were dressed better you probably had more (or at the least, equal) interest, but were seen as higher status and less approachable. Seems to me you have high enough smv that you get attention in less flattering clothing, and that's great. TRP is working. Keep lifting, stay confident. Sometimes looking sharp means putting yourself out there and initiating, but my bet is that when it comes down to bringing a girl home your nicer clothes will prove successful over sweat pants and a jersey 3:1.

Yes, it does. But it needs to fitted nicely and be of good quality. Take a suit for example. A cheap one (polyester crap) that's too large in an ugly color (green, errgh) and you will look like a greasy sleazy salesman. With a coal or grey, tight fitting wool suit, you'll look like a boss.

It's called peacock theory. You stood out. Now apply that same principle with better clothes and you will have even more results.
