Usually it's because they have demons of some sort - or just something bothering them in the moment. I have a friend who almost killed someone he was close too at one point and quit drinking because of it.

As much as I think chronic alcoholism is a sign of immaturity, it reveals who people are. People with shitty behaviors when drinking likely are that person, it just comes out when social niceties fall by the wayside. It's always the people with the most insecurities that are a wreck or a major pain in the ass.

Chronic Alcoholism is an escapism.
Usually when someone drinks a lot it's bc something is going on in their head they dont know how to handle or control.
Whether you consider it a weakness or a mental illness...both are very interlinked. So really, you could look at it from several angles and be right.
The issue with anger while drinking is the person is already angry but alcohol uninhibits the self control they have sober. It basically encourages them to let go of those bottled up feelings.
This is the same with any emotion really. That is why you see the sad drunks, the overly happy drunks, etc... They can no longer control those feelings.

Maybe I'm being pedantic here, but when you say "drinks a lot", are you referring to constantly in excess to the point of inebriation, or just often has a drink?
I personally feel those are two different things that could both fall under that one description.

I mean in the terms of no self-control.
A person who goes out with friends to drink a few nights a week or has a beer every night with his dinner most likely has the self-control to not drink.
A person who is buying a 5th of vodka every night before he goes home, probably does not have that self-control anymore.

I know many of the former, and am one myself. For us, drinking is about the alcohol itself and not the effect. It's about appreciating the different flavors and, what I'd consider craftsmanship, that went into creating them. Also pairing those flavors with others that compliment them; whether it be foods or cigars.

Two things:
Alcohol is a bonding thing. Some people bond by being friendly, some people bond by being whiners, some people by fighting, some by talking a lot....
People react to stress in many predictable and natural ways. Alcohol stresses people, including fighting.

One of my really good friends used to be a really shitty drunk. His wife had cheated on him with his best friend and for years after every time he had more than 8 or 10 beers he either became very angry or emotional. He never brought up the affair but we knew why he changed. About 2 years ago he found a beautiful lady and I've never seen him this happy. Now he can drink all night and he stays his happy talkative self. Whatever emotions or hurt you bury inside comes out when drink a lose control.

A buddy of mine has a girlfriend that berates him when she gets drunk. She constantly shit talks him, regardless of who is watching. He becomes visibly irritated. I think it's her shit testing him. Seeing how far she can push him.
She's very dependent on him for her lifestyle as she's going through her second DUI and he pretty much lives her life for her. It's been almost 3 months of house arrest and she's useless around the house. Watching TV all day. Not even cooking for herself.
I think all of her mooching and him letting her do it results in her berating of him. His inability to stick up for himself makes her resent him subconsciously. It manifests in reality when she drinks.
She always conveniently forgets what she said to him the next day. So he let's it go. Never let it go.

None of my LTRs in the past 12 years drink. Few of my plates. Zero of my inner circle of dudes drink beyond maybe a glass of wine or one glass of scotch whisky.
Drunkenness is low value amateurism.
If someone gets drunk, they're not really close to me. I value sober people.
The few women I knew with borderline personality disorder (BPD) got worse when drinking.

I have one friend that becomes an physically-agressive women-harrassing zombie when he drinks too much. It is a shame because in daily life he is an awesome and interesting dude. We made it clear that his behaviour is hard to tolerate when he is drunk but he says it is bullshit. Whenever I going out and he starts getting drunk I make sure I am not associated with that guy.
