Just don't do it from wrong frame, i.e. "it's her house and she lets me use one room as my man-cave" (especially beta: if "your" room is a corner of the garage).

It's your house. If you want to use one room as your office, you should do that.

An office, presuming you use it as a legit work space, is just an office. Work is work, and it has to be done somewhere.

If it become a retreat point, that's where it becomes worrisome. It's no different than if you have two cats in a house and one is terrorized into living in a limited space by the dominant one.

It's the idea that a location is a retreat point that is problematic. If you emerge from your office into your house to do your thing, then all is well. You just have an office. If you retreat from your house into your office . . . not so much.

Having a dedicated workspace is cool, even mandatory if you have work to do at home.

If I were to build a man cave because I wanted to, it would not be beta. If you build one for the sole reason that people on the Internet told you to, it would be beta. See the distinction?
