Also - requires a lot of external validation. I tried to date a really nice girl in another city once, and simply could NOT provide her with the amount of time and attention she needed because of the distance. So that one didn't work out.

Your feeling of self-worth should not come from others, but from inside yourself. To me, someone who draws their self worth from others is high-maintenance.

It means that it takes a great deal of time, effort, and/or money to keep the person satisfied.

In girl terms, think of a girl that needs you to constantly text her, buy her expensive haircuts all of the time, and constantly plays the 'you don't care enough about me' game to get more and more out of you.
