So where to start here.

I can say that it does happen - and more than you’d think. Firstly, how do you know I’m not talking shit? Well I am a recruiter, but we’ll keep it vague.

It happens wholesale - of course unless someone has a death wish they will not openly admit it, they commonly hide behind the whole pretence of not enough experience, Late for applying, job already filled etc. Sometimes it legit sometimes it’s not - anyone’s guess besides them.

Yeah unless you’re applying for hooters or some strip club, I’d remove the photo from CV. Not only is it not necessary, but it’s deemed quite cringey by us in the office - not a direct reason for not hiring someone m, but it’s the impressions that matter you know.

Another little tip , if you do have a foreign surname, put SOMEWHERE near the top that you are fluent in English or a citizen in the UK / US or wherever or 2nd / 3rd generation from whatever country. Maybe it’s a subconscious thing, and I used to be an English teacher so I really don’t mind it, but my colleagues would openly avoid calling people due to names / spelling mistakes in the CV as they presume (sometimes rightly, sometimes wrongly) that communication will be an issue.

Also relax bro, a literal pandemic going on at the minute, we’re operating at 30% capacity right about now. And those other people who are under qualified getting these “awesome” jobs that you are seeing , I presume seeing as in on social media??? Don’t worry about that shit, a lot easier to make a pile of shit look appealing when you can’t smell it.

People want this constant image of success and they feel that if people think they are, then they are. So by you feeling they are more successful is making them feel more successful - which is the biggest load of shit I’ve ever heard.

Bottom line - qualifications don’t mean shit. It’s the experience that really matters - the amount of times we had to overlook qualification issues due to a good candidate fit you wouldn’t believe.

So they’re either:

more experienced than you’d think
lying blatantly about how good their job is
just lucky (right place right time)

Not likely to discriminate according to surname as most HR workers in the UK are pro-immigration, but if you have any doubts try sending out your CV with a westernised surname and see for yourself if it makes a difference.

Also I think it could be because of "feminisation" of corporate world, where they hire a person not because they would be a great contribution to a business with their set of skills and experience, but because they "feel" this candidate would fit in well with a team... Therefore they prefer to hire people with same background / upbringing.

fyi you can use a pseudonym on resumes. a lot of people do it.

There's often fuckery when it comes to institutions.. Add in unconscious bias.

I will say, due to the Western cultural conversation around diversity and inclusion, more HR and hiring managers are making an effort to screen and hire minorities.

Russian/Eastern European surname, I would imagine, shouldn't really be a big deal. Is your first name something easy for people to say?

This might be an issue with your resume. If you're applying online to these roles, the AI is not picking up the keywords and that's why you're not getting calls.

I recently used a resume builder tool that suggests keywords that will increase the chances. You can find it on Zety.com

Edit: You should also work on your interview and presentation skills. Do lots of prep. Write down answers to common interview questions and have them in front of you. Be confident and don't get thrown off by their questions.

Similar situation, I feel it can make a little difference. But tbh I've seen people with unpronounceable polish surnames in good office positions, and a few job ads that requested a blind CV (ie without any personal info) which is an awesome idea. And I have the impression that the recruitment sector in the UK has a larger percentage of international people than a lot of other office jobs, so not sure how unconsciously biased they are.
