Do your research. I had to debate why the government should defund NPR and out of 8 people (4 on each side), I was the only who was citing data and clearly knew what I was talking about. It became a debate between me and another student but she was just pulling words out of her ass. I had the much harder argument to make in that environment yet I was the clear winner because doing my research gave me the confidence to speak with conviction. Kids are lazy. Be less lazy and you will win.

You just have to know your audience, you don't necessarily have to be correct to win a debate.

Your arguments need to appeal to the audience on a personal level.

There's nothing that will ensure you win a debate if your argument sucks or is simply less convincing than your opponent's.

If you look back to the early debate between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama, Romney non-verbally imposes himself with a face-out lean during Obama's remarks. That's about as physical as it gets, unless you're doing a stand-and-walk instead of podium style, then it just depends entirely on the audience what style they prefer.

Your body language while speaking, however, should be focused on the content of what you're saying. Don't smile if it's a serious matter, don't scowl if you're appealing to their sense of humor; you have to focus on appearing natural.

There is no 'winning' here, it's a matter of opinion. The federal gov't has sole responsibility over legal immigration. The only thing you can talk about is how it is good/bad for the country. Stick to what legal immigrants do, their effect on our culture, job market, welfare system. Find facts from decent sources and memorize them. What benefits/downsides are there to bringing them over here.

You could go another way tho, from the foreign country's side, how they are losing out on their best of the best citizens that qualify for legal immigration, and the positive things they would've done in their home country if they didn't leave.
