You have to use your own judgment, man, but there's an old saying in politics: If you're explaining, you're losing.

“why do you like that sort of shit” is not a question, it's an accusation. She's literally calling "shit" something that brings you joy and reprieve from the struggles of the normal day-to-day. And she's saying that you shouldn't enjoy it. In this case, you really shouldn't offer an explanation in my opinion, but I agree with your broader point that "never explain" should not be taken absolutely.

Here she is judging your taste and disrespecting it, implying that she hates that stuff. That's the first layer of the onion. The second layer is that the content of the message doesn't really matter because it's a shit test, designed by her subconscious to see how you react.

So, don't justify yourself for what you enjoy.

You can explain things when it's needed, but keep it brief and aloof. Basically you just don't want to seem like you're bothered by it.

Learn the art of influence and how language shapes people’s thoughts and behaviors.

A girl asking you why you chose something should be met with a brief response like ‘It’s what’s best for me’ or ‘I have my reasons, don’t worry your pretty little head’

The logic behind this is -> a woman doesn’t give a shit about the details in language like us logical males do. She is checking to see if you are UNCERTAIN in your frame and how you see yourself. It’s an emotional ping to see your reaction. This is how they operate, even subconsciously.

That’s why the band aid responses here are suggested. But it helps to know the underlying reason behind it, and now you can mold it to fit your communication style.
