My man. I just talked about this to another guy on another thread but it's a great question so I'm happy to retype.

I don't do the "talk little and listen to what they have to say" crap.

I generally start conversations at all times with people around me including cute girls at the bar.

The conversations are total bullshit at first. Nothing about them but me just remarking on situations. Until we get comfortable chatting then a normal conversation ensues.

I mean, I don't even know them or know if I want to have a real conversation and I'm sure they feel the same way.

A good example is last Wednesday. I roll up to the bar by myself because I just picked up my car thats been in the shop for a month (fuck you Audi).

I start chatting to an old woman next to me about how wow I can't believe I finally got my car back! We BS about how annoying cars can be and a cute girl rolls up next to me. I say hey I'm ___ were in the midst of a good car bitching. Whats your experience with that?

We BS about her past car problems and start laughing then start actually talking then I invite her back to my place.

The point is...Don't have a heavy conversation at first. Just chat about meaningless bullshit until it's comfortable and then the more serious shit will flow naturally.

At 21 you have all the time in the world. The easiest place to pick up a girl is at a bar on a Tuesday or Wednesday.

Practice free association and do interesting shit with your life.

I was in the same boat as you when talking with people in general.

Every day I did the following just for 5-10 or so minutes:

go to randomword.com
start a timer for 5 mins
open up notepad.exe
find 3 words or things that relates to the word(even if you dont know what it means, what does it remind you of?) in step 1 and write them in notepad
the third word you come up with will be the starting point for the next 3 words you come up with
repeat step 4,5 until the timer runs out.

Effectively what this does is help my brain grab out interesting things to talk about to keep conversations going(AKA oh that reminds me of when I did xyz...).

The best I have going for me is just hanging onto a conversation and not losing frame while keeping a straight face when saying something sarcastic or not laughing at their jokes.

This is enough. I don't have much more then this and finding women isn't a problem for me as long as I get out and put in the time opening. Opening can be anything. "This place is great huh?" "I love those shoes" then if you're a normal person with life experiences the conversation will just flow after that. As it flows avoid sensitive subjects like religion, gender wars, politics and focus on FORD. Family, occupation, relationships, dreams. I'd say after you've had a couple of quality back and forths get the number and move on, even if it's a small bar. She needs process time. If she is a lazy conversationalists she either dumb or not into you or a bit of both and you shouldn't force it with a girl like that. Don't try to buy things from shop owners that refuse to sell.

There's really only one thing you need to know: stop thinking about it so much. I guarantee you've done it before accidentally. There's no grand formula that's going to work for you in every situation, no matter what people say. And if someone says otherwise, they're usually just trying to sell you something.

The truth is, the less you obsess over opening, the more you'll be able to do it. And the more you do it, the better you'll get. It's that simple, really. Go out, approach often, and stop beating yourself up so damn much.
