To what end? As an immigrant to the US from the middle east via Europe, it's important for me to keep up with what the US is doing regarding the "Muslim ban" and similar issues, but in a larger sense, keeping up is a "nice to have"

To what end?

Well, they tend to be the topic in a lot of male-to-male conversations.

Mind sharing how you got out of the ME? Any advice for someone in uni for CS there wanting to get out would be appreciated.

By being born in Belgium :)

you should know what is happening in the world. But there is one topic you could talk to a chick about that you list, but even then thats a hard maybe.

News and politics are usually not worth bringing up anyways. Sports though, is an easy way to make strong acquaintences. It's literally the only topic with such a large scope on making male friends. So many people can connect with it and it's crazy how different a relationship can change with those you don't no very well, just by connecting over a sport.

Agree. I only know NFL really well so I can always connect with someone regardless of team, since i know key players on every squad. Always build a connection from it. Especially when they feel like you know your stuff

This literally almost never works on girls unless they make it obvious theyre a NFL fan. Some girls and guys just wear jerseys for the style.

Truu and in a society where people like to keep a lot of their business to themselves it's hard to find connections that run that deep. Even those who don't feel it themselves have loved ones who do.

Ive turned many awkward conversations into a connection solely off talking football.

I actually wanted to learn about NBA for this purpose as well.. however I dont have a genuine interest in it - why waste my time? It would broaden my scope socially though in terms of connecting with people since theres a huge fanbase there as well.

I personally only keep track of things that interest me. Virtually only MMA and some science.

I got rid of my TV 10 years ago, I don't buy newspapers or magazines and I try to avoid online news as much as possible, with the exception of major topics like the recent Las Vegas incident, although I do not follow that too closely as well.

I don't take part in the voting farce and don't give a fuck about politics at all. They are just a charade to give you the illusion of having power, to "legalize" the re-distribution of ressources to the top, and serve as strawmen for you in order to have something to blame for your shitty life and are generally there in order to keep the sheep quite.

It's like the mob letting you vote on who's gonna be the guy that oversees the guys who come and collect the protection money and their henchmen for the couple next years.

You never find that it hurts you in conversation when you can't talk about those topics?

[–]Scymnus0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It depends on your situation, if your job/social life requires you to have a lot of casual conversations you could use it to your advantage. However it’s not really needed for women you want to fuck or close male bonding.

If you have trouble being social it’s far better to keep up a bit than coming off as weird.

Nah. I am not interested in talking about that shit anyways.
