I was in the same boat after I left high school. I worked as a aircraft mechanic for awhile then I quit and joined the military. I don't know how it is for all military jobs but, In mine for example you really need to be motivated and love it or else there is no point and you won't make it.

I've developed a lot since I joined the military. My friends and family have told me that anyway. The only problem with that is that your friends and family will become more and more different to you and your "co-workers".

I recommend you to try out being an aircraft mechanic, its an interesting hands on job that requires you to think as well. You'll meet a lot of people and have a chance at a lot of travel. I worked with restoration of WWII aircraft in California and built airbus jets in France. It doesn't require a the same commitment as the military and its an interesting thing to put on your CV.

What are you trying to develop?

If you need money, get an internship at a big corporation.

If you need social skills, get a job waiting tables.

If you want to develop physically, get a lawn care job.

Serving/Bartending

It's THE BEST job for a young person looking to develop social skills. Just don't get caught up in the partying and drugs

enlisting in the armed forces can easily end up as a longer commitment than planned. I'd research that quite extensively before signing any papers, you might not be able To get out in 3 years.

However, if you're able to work things out to your time frame, and I presume you're American , the armed services will pay a significant portion of your college tuition for when you get out. However the process is slanted towards STEM work, so if the degree you're seeking isn't stem , then I'm not sure how much coverage they'll give you. Going to school now is very important, but getting out with as manageable debt as possible is too.

For other careers: if you don't mind working your ass off and doing 10 hour days (sometimes more) every day, you can work in the oil fields. Go to a training center , get certified, make 35k with insurance right out of high school on shore, work a few years off shore and you'll look at 100k+. That's for the vagabond though , as I'm sure you're aware your time is typically week on, week off , or 3 weeks on to 3 weeks off..and if you go off shore than its a matter of months on and months off. Once again , this isn't really a viable long term strategy for your whole life, but the money is there, and you could like it (or not) my advice is don't get caught up in shit that keeps you in the field. You're there to get in and get out. If you buy a nice ass truck when you're makin 100k as a 24 year old, buy your gold digger a house, you can't leave the field , your money supply , because you need that money for your new lifestyle.

Teach English abroad, South Korea is in big demand currently and I always enjoy my time in country. Their system is reliable, although payment varies considerably between public school , private school and after school cram schools. The Middle East and south east Asia , central and South America are also hiring. Don't go to Russia , their currency is shit. This job is easy in comparison to others and can get you teaching experience which is valuable if that's a path you want to pursue, but you need to be open and dedicated to learning the native language. You'll be a lonely hermit if you don't, trust me.

There's lots of jobs out there. Just a lot of them aren't long term, and I'm sure you can imagine why. School needs to be a priority, but it's a smart decision to make money first and then pay your way. Best of luck.

An alternative to the military is Americorps. It's crap pay, but upon completion of the one year contract you get 2-6k grant towards college, depending on your hours. The advantage is that you acquire work experience and connections that you could not otherwise get as an 18 year old entry level applicant. The work tends to be environmental or educational.

Any job that requires customer service for a high volume of people. For example, I worked at a Gamestop in a mall. Yes, I saw my fair share of uber-dorks with DS's strapped to their belts, but I also got to flirt with hot moms who brought in their little kids to find games, the coworker girls who were hired just because they look like "gamer girls" and know how to upsell, as well as the girls who worked elsewhere in the store. If you treat it right, you'll end up looking forward to every shift. I picked Gamestop because I was selling something I knew and enjoyed - but I made sure to work at the one in the mall with the most traffic.

Another good idea is to work at an Aldi/Whole Foods/(insert trendy small food store) working the register. High volume of single women passing through there as well.

As far as just being a better person, you can figure out which manager is actually a good leader, and learn to watch how they react to difficult situations, how to handle difficult customers, etc.

Become an EMT or a 911 dispatcher. You'll learn how to keep your shit together in an emergency and deal with people that are freaking out

Any job where you give everything you have to succeed is going to help you develop self discipline, self control and ambition. Fuck, it could be a job washing floors, as long as you do everything you can to be excellent at it.

Edit: Volunteering or getting a job for a charity that you feel strongly about is an excellent way of starting. You network with like minded people, can make a good name for yourself and chicks love it.
