Women sometimes cry for attention, and their feelings are genuine but transient. Comforting her for something like this can make her more upset so she can get more attention.

You can't be swayed by female emotions. Otherwise you end up running your whole life trying to appease her feelings while she doesn't respect you.

The question was simple for you, might not be simple for her. You probably tried too hard to help her, and didn't address her feelings, ie fixing the problem she says, rather than the real problem. It's better to back out of trying to help her rather than be mean to her. Treat as per child.

You shouldn't have said the mean things. Find a better way in future, women will love you for it.

Don't make it up, don't apologise, don't next. Be normal, and/or do nice stuff with her that she likes. Apology = submission = inviting more trouble.

Were you fair or unfair? You're the judge, not her.
If you were unfair, you apologize. Else, you did as much as you're supposed to, seeking to comfort her and leaving when you realized it's ineffective.

Some women employ this strategy, it's an unfolding of passive aggressiveness:
They act odiously but with no overt aggression because they're women and they're non confrontational. It drives their partners into getting angry and acting aggressive, because they're men. At this point, they'll express INTENSE pain and drive their partners into feeling a lot of guilt, which will make them take responsibility for easing their suffering.
At this point the battle is won and their partners owe them a LOT of comforting. They'll NEVER admit it's enough because as long as they're still aching, their partners will go further in comforting them.
If this is your chick, I suggest hard nexting. Annoying creatures, these ones.
For serious, watch your ass. Unaware dudes stay with these chicks for too long and end up dead scared of disappointing them because they cause them to feel so much guilt and pain, they're rather being spineless doormats.

On a note:
While I encourage minimum drama break ups with generic and intangible excuses that your partner can't possibly address, in this case I'd go with the truth, phrased in harsh fashion:
"I dislike hurting people and I rarely do, and I never had to walk on eggshells because of it. But you're too fragile and I'd have to, so I'd rather finding someone else."

Donovan Sharpe had a great response to this exact situation, "Let me know when you're finished, so that we can continue." TSR #211 hover around 40min mark for the detailed rationale.
