Hey /r/asktrp

This semester I am looking to diversify my skills and add martial arts to my skillset. I already lift(19 months and counting) for fitness so I got that covered. My university is offering classes once a week for various martial arts at a very low cost. I don't expect to get in a confrontation IRL (I am an Aerospace Engineer and focused in research so it probably won't help me in my day-to-day life) I have the following questions:

  1. Which martial art do you recommend and why? I am a complete beginner but like everything I do, I intend to gain mastery and don't want this to be a one-time thing.
  2. I am on a cut and running a caloric deficit to cut down to 9-10% for spring break and the summer. I expect this cut to last majority of the semester. Is a 60-90 min session once a week very taxing on the body? What diet changes are needed?
  3. Any personal changes you experienced after starting martial arts training.

Thank you!
