Optimism or Realism?

Optimism, always. So called "realism" can kill you, seriously. You become depressed, and being depressed sucks.

So called "realists" are just a bunch of pessimists unable to do something about their lives. They are "realist" about their weight, so they never lose it. They are "realist" about their looks, so they never improve. They are "realist" about their finances, so they never make more money. They are "realist" about the world, so they never try to make an impact. They are "realist" about their relationships, so they settle for the first pussy they get.

If you want to be realist about something, get facts about it. For example, TRP. You have facts, so you are realist that you are never gonna find a unicorn, so you go and spin plates.

Read the book Learned Optimism by Martin Seligman.

Trying to find a passion is just plain stupid, because you need to build it. Nobody gets born with a passion for programming, you build it as you become better and better on the field, or when you find that you are really good at it. And even passionate programmers get tired from time to time. Read the book So Good They Can't Ignore You by Cal Newport.

You have at least 50 years of life to enjoy.

You're here on redpill, which puts you ahead of 80% of the population.

Everybody's life sucked at 19. You're just starting on the path to being an adult. This takes years. Some never become adults.

You get to choose your own life, your own adventure. You're not bound by anything other than what is in your own head and your drive.

Find a hobby, a passion. Get away from anything with a screen.

I'm 47, wealthy, collect cars and motorcycles as one of my hobbies (just bought my first Aston), in the best shape of my life, been lifting 35 years (5'10, 210, 19 inch bi's, striated delts, 4 pack), spin 3-4 plates on a regular basis, married for 20 years and she accepts I'm nonmonogamist, a Dom, n count way over 150 (stopped counting years ago) and love the fucking shit out of my life. I started as a four eyed low income latchkey chubby geeky kid to a single mom that had me at 17 on the other side of the continent in a different country.

I can't wait for each and every morning. It was hard work getting here, there were setbacks, and I had to grind and suck up the shit for a few years, but it's so worth it. I did it. Myself.

So get out of your own head. Get busy doing. Sounds like a motivational speaker but it's true.

Start out on a path. Any path. Soon you'll come upon a fork, and have to choose. This will keep happening, and your choices will lead you exactly to where you want to be, even if you don't know where that is yet.( none of us did at 17.)

As long as you keep walking you'll end up at your destination.

Here's a quick list of hobbies/passions/pastimes of mine from the last year...pick a few...

Car collecting, Hiking, Road Biking, Guitar/drums, Drone flying, Motorcycle collecting, Motocross/enduro, Scuba, Rec. Pilot, Metal fab/welding, Beermaking, Shooting/ gunsmithing, Archery, Snowboarding, Snowshoeing, Hunting, Fishing, Track Days, Glamping, Navigational Rally racing, Surfing, 3 gun, SUP, Rock Climbing, Music Festivals, Tattooing, Road Trips, Wearing womens' clothes, Primitive wilderness camping, Drag racing, Jetski, Home bartending, Whiskey club, Backcountry snowmobiling, Supercar club, Mountainclimbing, Mountainbiking, Downhill mountainbiking, Sailing, Home mechanic, Woodworking, Millwright/machining, Painting, BDSM, Dog training, Riding Quads (fourwheelers, not paralyzed people), Sub training, Riding horses, Riding women, Ride on lawnmower, Being a dick on the internet.

The workplace is not that dichotomy "awesome passion or shit job" you think it is.

Your "passion" may not only fail to bring you an income but also prove boring over time, or having some side aspects that ruin it.

Your "shit job" might turn out to have interesting problems that your mind is wired to tackle, whether it is dealing with problems, or trying to convince people.

I'd say rather than trying to figure if you have a passion for "banking", or "sales", consider instead what seems to get your focus right on the moment. Do you prefer talking with people? Dealing with numbers? Being hands-on? Being on a computer? Assessing this will not narrow the "fields" you can join, but your role in any of them. For example, if you prefer talking to people, then you should be wise to get some sales experience or degree. Then whether you end up selling vacuum cleaners in Delaware, or selling surfboards in Bali, depends on how you plan ahead and prioritize.

I decided to like what I was good at instead of trying to be good at what I liked. Don't ignore your inherent advantage and pick a career that maximizes on them. You'll love it when you start doing well in it.

Do a year of sales and get your money up. In the mean time figure out what you wanna do. Shit it may be sales if money is your only goal.

At 19, just keep a job to pay the bills and a little savings, while you "find yourself." There's no rush to be in a career right away. Just be able to support yourself, and eventually you'll find that job opening, that hobby that makes money, or at the very least you'll have time to figure it out.

I started in my field at 21. I'm 25 now, still a long way from the top, but constantly learning and advancing. It was one of my hobbies that I was able to turn into a job. I'd rather make a little less to do what I like, than make a little more and hate the work week. After all, it is where the majority of your time is spent, you might as well like it

Read a lot. Exercise. And take shit job. This aka searching is dangerous thing. An excuse to do nothing.

Get your shit together before you start searching. You might just end up on top of what you were searching.
