Throwaway time.

I have decided after much deliberation to divorce my wife as soon as my daughter turns 18. More than anything, the reason I am staying around is to help mitigate the effects my wife's emotional vaccilations on my daughter's day to day life. While I care for her, my wife is emotionally unstable and it eats at me a little bit each day. However, keeping day-to-day life somewhat stabilized for my daughter has become non-negotiable for me, but as soon as she is either able to live with me by choice or live on her own, I will be out. My wife is certainly not clinical, and I am not so doe-eyed as to believe I will prevail in a custody match, so here I stay. I am looking for some input from men with a TRP mindset in order to prepare in the meantime, and the internet is a trove of misinformation on this subject.

Some facts. We live in a community property state, and the age of consent is 18 (about 4 years away for my daughter). My wife is a stay-at-home mom that has dabbled in a "career" in the arts, but is not self-sufficient at this time. However, she has a bachelor's degree while I have some college. I am the sole breadwinner, and we clear about 250K per year. We have no debt, and about $200K in assets. I plan to fully pay for college for my daughter.

  • The non-tangibles of staying involved at home are significant, but am I foolish to ride this out for four more years?
  • What advice do you have for to prepare for D-day?
  • I am hoping to move out-of-state as soon as I can after the split. How long would I need to wait around?
  • What can I realistically expect to pay in alimony, and for how long?

I thank you all in advance for your input.
