When you are starting a business with someone you have to trust them wholeheartedly. There can be no doubts about them whatsoever. When you start a business with someone your lives are intertwined very intimately for a long time.

I personally would not start a business with this guy if you don’t trust him.

It’s your life though so you do what you want, but this is my warning.

If you cannot trust him with your entire life, he is not worth starting a business with. He will be tied to your finances and that is not a risk you want to take with someone you cannot trust 100%.

Weigh the pros - cons. If there is anyway that they could shit on you financially with this, I wouldn't do it.

Is there ANY way to protect the leverage of your stake in the business?

If you’re indispensable because the business wouldn’t function without your participation or if you have some contract that keeps your investment separate, then you can disincentivize him from screwing you.

That said, if you can’t do the above, I’d avoid it. It’s likely he’ll bullshit you to your face again and it’ll be worst because it may be crunch time and he’s withholding information that could tank the operation.

Depends on what you have to risk. If not much, yes. Considering your history you obv can't trust him 100% so never let your guard down and think of it as gaining advantage od his idea etc.

Like managing your emotional investment with a woman (always have her invested more), have the same mentality with him. If you are a pushover, you are not ready.

I've wondered about this too.

There aren't that many golden opportunities that come to you in life. Maybe the partners of mark zuckerberg would've ultimately preferred to get zucked over getting left out. Maybe not. Who knows. However, I think what really matters when there's a business is that you can make each other laugh. If you can't do that, then how do you expect to resolve conflicts. Beyond that, I think the best thing to do is to be as stubborn as possible. A good partner is one that wants you to negotiate just as hard as they are for more ownership and work and responsibility in the business. You guys should both be trying to jockey for power constantly if it's a good business. Neither side should be slacking, just like in an LTR, both sides should be on their grind improving their smv constantly, and if one side falls short or can't hack it, NEXT

Just tell bim from the get go that you dont trust him and that you are going to secure everything in written form / contract form. Then do that and be extremely careful
