So. I've been noticing people saying "get abs" rather than simply "lift" on TRP lately.

At my age (40's) an 5'11 / 185 - getting bigger while working on making abs show is almost mutually exclusive.

I definitely notice, as I put on mass that I get more compliments / comments from people but, I have to admit. As I stand around the 20% bf range I am teetering on "dad bod" level.

Fortunately, I have relatively broad shoulders and a decent chest so i have a decent shape but no hint of abs at this point. Then again, don't abs really only count when shirtless?

I should say, I had major surgery fairly recently and my plan is to get back to the strength I was at before (basically being able to do 5x5 squatting of my body weight - 185). Once I hit that goal I plan to aggressively cut to "see" the muscle that I've developed better. Will this even work?

TLDR: Is it better to be smaller with abs or softer with mass and shape?
