Tips on asking for a raise?

Abundance mentality.

Do you have other offers? (They do not need to be "better" offers for you in particular... but you at least need "other" offers.)

Essentially, you need to be able to run some effective dread game.

If no one else wants you, then bringing that subject up will only make you seem disloyal. It will harm you at your current employment, and not make you closer to new employment.

Look at it like this...

1.) "I don't feel you're paying me enough, so I'm thinking I should seek other offers unless you pay me enough not to look."

2.) "I'm getting other offers."

I've been getting more and higher responsibilities and less supervision; which is why I'd like to get more money. I've never done this before, though.

How old are you, and how long have you been with your current employer?

It is very common for a company to take a loss when they hire someone. They train you, integrate you, pay you more than you produce, while betting that you'll work out in the future. Where are you on that timeline?

The goal is to really be actually pulling other offers, even if you like your current employment. That tells you that you're over the hump.

I don't ask for a raise, I negotiate a salary. When you ask for something you give all the power to the party you are asking. If I provide more worth to the company than I cost I will be able to negotiate for more. You have to keep in mind a realistic accurate idea of the actual contributions you make to company profit and how easy/hard you are to replace. If you're easy to replace you aren't likely to get a raise.

I recently asked for a raise. I told my supervisor (not same employer as I work on contract) I wanted a raise. He said that is something I would have to discuss with my contract company, but he would give me his recommendation if asked. I contacted my company rep (basically an admin girl) about who my actual supervisor at the company even was. She said all raises had to go through the Vice President. I looked up his e-mail on the website and sent him a short e-mail which stated my name, job function and that I would like to discuss a raise in salary. I received a 8.3% raise effective the next month.

One more piece of advice. Asking when the company is pleased with you isn't always the best time. For example asking for a raise following the successful completion of a large project. Company may be happy with you, but you're very replaceable at this point. Asking when a large project is 80% done and it would be very difficult to replace you with out major interruption (or even failure) to the project might be a much better time to ask for that raise.

Keep in mind going into this that when you ask for a raise there's a higher chance you won't get it then actually getting it.

Be prepared to answer "Why should I give you a raise?" Also be prepared to hear "Realistically it's just not in the budget." That's his way of letting you down easy.
