If you really wanted to take her on a date then control the conversation in a direction that gets her thinking about that and set one up. you dont need to have her number until the last part of the conversation. once you get it, it almost feels like the game has lost part of it attraction, so flirt, get her where she wants you to ask her out and then ask her out. then get the number

No. Call her and ask her out. If she says no, say, "ok, see you around" and move on.

It was a weak move but you can still recover. Have your high school friend set up another get together/dinner. The minute you see her again, you smile and say, "Oh by the way, before I forget, let me get your number so we can do something awesome together."

Make it as non-nonchalant as possible almost like it's in passing. If she says no, change the subject and talk about something funny. If she says ok and gives you her number, do the same thing.
