What does "holding frame" mean?

It's keeping the mindset of : This is how I think, this is how I behave, these are the principles I live my life by

Holding frame means keeping your mindset regardless of attempts of breaking your frame. Shit Tests are an example of those attempts.

I'm having trouble understanding what people mean with "holding frame".

When stated as "holding frame" around here, it is usually in response to shit tests.

In those cases, it usually means to not get whiny, apologetic, backpedaling, etc.

If you're an analytical person... as many who find their way to TRP are... you'll find it counter-intuitive that simply "holding frame" will work for you. "I mean really... I just keep saying something is true, and mutherfuckers believe it?? Gotta be fucking kidding me." No... not kidding... that's how it works a lot of the time. Sucks or not, that's the reality you are embarking on here.

But as an analytical person, you'll experiment, find out it works, and then start understanding why. You'll find out it works in the most stupid ways. You'll suddenly understand a lot of things that seemed stupid and nonsensical before.

Example:

GF wants to talk about how we manage it if she goes aupair for 6 months. I tell her that I forbid it. "You never forbid me anything and you can't do that." I still tell her that I will forbid it. "It sucks that you are going to throw away our relationship just because I am going aboard" I don't care, you are not going away. "But I will regret it all my life long, but I would also regret leaving you, there must be a way to make this work." I tell her that she will have to live with regret. Just 5 minutes later she was happier than before.

I didn't cave in, I didn't offer to visit her each month, I sticked to my opinion and it became her opinion.

Another word for frame could be: composure, countenance, equanimity, sophrosyne, mental strength

How to reinforce your frame? Stoicism, Zen Buddhism, Abundance mentality (You won't bend your stand to the needs of others when you can make get what you want from many other sources)
