Comes from Rollo Tomassi, The Rational Male. In a series of posts at his site, he discusses meeting, dating and rotating multiple women. A man has to manage them much like a magician or carnival worker spinning a number of plates on rods. Most are spinning well; sometimes he has to start one; occasionally a plate stops spinning and falls to the ground, breaking in the process. The trick is to keep as many plates in the air as you can.

Each woman a Man dates, has sex with or brings on is a "plate".

A woman he's met and hasn't had sex with is a "prospect". A woman isn't a plate until he's had sex with her.

Some women are upgraded to relationship status. They get promoted from plate status to relationship status. FWBs, short term relationships, and women who a man has just started having sex with, are "plates".

The complaint is that calling women "plates" dehumanizes them. But for men, it's a useful visual heuristic.

Yeah I read the sidebar, I got the hierarchy, I just didn't understand where the terms came from.

I always thought the origional of the word had to do with the carnival act since we "spin" plates. But I didn't get why it was plates specifically since your average guy spins many things, but very rarely actually ceramic plates. But the part about the hem falling and break8ng and such makes it all make sense now

My personal take on it is they're called plates, akin to spinning plates on sticks.

You get the plate spinning, and things are good. You can get another spinning. They spin independently of each other. Things are now twice as cool. Eventually, without very, very careful attention to keeping it spinning - the plate will fall, and break. This is okay. You still have the stick, another plate still spinning, and there are more plates to get up there and spin than you could possibly ever know what to do with.

Rookies can get a plate or two spinning with a little practice. Masters can get and keep even more spinning with less effort, because they've put in the work to develop it.

Spin away, friend.

EDIT: To explain the plate breaking, this is eventually when a woman will either push for your commitment and stop the sex flowing, she gets a boyfriend, you get bored with her, whatever. The plate breaks. Sometimes the plate will bounce, and you'll have another shot at getting it spinning at a later date.

That's what I thought.

But I was confused because everyman spins lots of objects in his life, but very rarely does he spin actual ceramic plates. So I was confused why he chose China wear when he could have chosen, say, steering wheels.

But since it's a juggling act, it all makes sense now

It comes from an old vaudeville act. There used to be specialized jugglers who were called "plate spinners." They put the plates on top of bamboo poles and spun them. The centripetal force keeps the plate balance on the pole. The juggler pays just enough attention to each plate to keep it spinning without falling. They used to brag about how many plates they could spin at once.

Sound familiar? The idea is that a man pays JUST enough attention to a woman to keep her interested without committing, and does it to as many as he can so that has a variety of sex partners without getting nailed down.

Here's an example of old-time plate spinning. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k44uoVm0lPI

Not sure if it is related, but Spanish has an expression that is basicly plate - "segundo plato". If a girl knows you have other girls, she will get mad and say that she does not want to be your "second plate". I think this refers more to like a dinner plate, maybe like leftovers.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Because if you're alpha enough, you can eat your dinner off them.

[–]buddboy[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You ever see that guy that can eat metal and ceramics?

If you're really alpha enough, you can eat them for dinner.

Thank you I'm hear all night

Edit: I actually go to bed at 1130
