You're relationship with your son, is entirely up to you. Don't compromise on this.. a son has a right to know his father. If you give in and let your wife have her way... well, think about the lesson that teaches your son.

But I think you already know what we're going to say. Our advice is just going to confirm what you've already figured out for yourself.

Can't comment on how to. Just that I grew up in a traditional family and didn't get spoiled even though family had millions of euros sitting in banks.

To give you an idea, I didn't have a video gaming console until last year that I bought for myself. My first car was a '88 Hilux.

My mom was very strict. I never missed school. My dad was close, but never too much. We did stuff together and it was alright, but he never compromised and I respect him for that.

My mother absolutely did not compromise and it made me self sufficient. Now granted, it made me rebel in my high school years and my way of disrespecting the family was banging and dating middle class girls and putting my family's name behind them, but I came to my senses.

Don't compromise.

See if she will allow this type of relationship if it's based on a reward of some sort of achievement on his part.

Traditional gender roles would be that your son earns your ire, it isn't given simply because he is there.

I have two kids and learned that there is no "getting through to her" about matters like this.

Have the relationship with your son that you want. Handle her bitching about it the same way we handle everything else. Tell her once and only once that this is your son and you will be the father that he needs. When she complains you treat it like the shit test that it is.

What the fuck does your wife know about raising a boy? Also...your MILs opinion means almost nothing. I often remind my wife that if I wanted her mother's advice then I would ask for it

You need to set some boundaries. Prepare for the next time she is overly strict with your son and confront her about it.

Disarm her first. Say something like: "I know you are a great mom and only want whats best for our son... but..." and then lay down the law.

She sounds like a reasonable enough woman who respects you, so she should respect this.
