I was looking for conversational tips because I'm way too logical and rational, occasionally hitting emotional points--and therefore connection--by sheer chance. I stumbled upon Richard La Ruina's video about better conversation by considering Emotions, Motivations, and Character Traits, but he did not explain how to apply these to further the conversation and deepen the connection. Character Traits seems to be great for assumptions (cold reads?), but that's all I got. Is it just as simple as asking "How did that make you feel?" or "Why did you do that?" Those questions come off a bit like interrogation to me, but I don't know how else to dig at Emotions and Motivations.
