Cold approaching in a library

Treat it like a bookstore (or any store with products like books as usable props). You may need to be a little quieter than a bookstore, but that depends. BTW, it wasn't a lack of familiarity that stopped you...but approach anxiety.

Here's my favorite way to ~~approach~~ interact with girls at the library.

A couple assumptions first: one, I assume you are going to the library to study. Sure, there are cute girls and opportunities everywhere on campus, but your studies come first. Two, I assume your library has a main room where strangers have the opportunity to sit and study next to one another.

I crossed out "approach" above because cold approaching girls at the library is difficult. It's definitely doable, but I like to use a different method.

When I go to the library to study (assumption 1), I like to position myself in a way that gives me the most opportunity to open cute girls around me. So I usually go to the most open, populated reading rooms where the most girls are (assumption 2). I walk slowly and scan for an open seat--and especially an open seat next to a cute girl.

I'll smile and say hello as I sit, but then I open up my books and get into studying. I use my peripherals to see how the girl is doing. Is she intensely focused, or does her body language look like she wants a study break or some social interaction?

When I'm ready (and she seems open enough), I'll turn to her and ask her something about the subject I'm studying or homework I'm working on. For instance, if I'm writing a paper I'd turn to her and say, "Excuse me, I'm writing an essay on cultural appropriation of Native American sports mascots. Could you look over this paragraph and see if it makes sense to you?" Or, "Do you know anything about the time complexity of Newton's Method for computational minimization?"

I'm not trying to get an explicit answer. I'm just using a very natural opener for a university student at the library:talking about my intellectual pursuits. I make sure to ask my question in a playful tone to convey that I'm not looking for a serious answer. The girl will give her two cents, and it is quite easy to transition into a conversation from there. I'll ask her about what she's studying. If she's interested, she'll ask me more about what I'm studying. And you can steer anywhere from there.
