Flirting with Cosplayers is a bit sketchy, they are already high on their guard so your best bet is to approach them at the after party/raves/other club like events. I have heard stories of guys picking up cosplay girls at conventions but in my experience it wasn't easy. I usually just admire, but don't even bother mostly to avoid being creepy.

Had a homie that went to a con dressed as some Disney character. His future girlfriend went as a female character from the same movie. She's skinny and sexy, he's chubby and funny. They hit it off, and they live together now. As cute as she was, she was super nerdy. Be careful of what you wish for.

The first thing to realize is that there isn't really some "trick" to this specific environment.

But there is a mindset that will help there, and any other place. That mindset is to observe and use what you observe to relate to others.

I feel like it might be really hard, because it's a nerd-culture thing, so they will probably have their guards up for all the thirsty, awkward guys who will try to talk to them.

Right, and those guys you're talking about, usually don't pay attention, they just open conversation with cringey shit about how hot the girls are or some comment that is really basic.

In my experience, counterintuitively, the more provocatively a woman is dressed, the more hostile she is to people who give her attention, and the more modestly she is dressed, the more she seems to appreciate that same attention.

Trying to figure out a "rule," is a great way to play it safe, but also a way to miss out on all the little wonderful exceptions in life that you could see if you focus on observing, rather than trying to predict ahead of time.

So, uh, how do I pick up cute cosplayers?

It's really the same as you would pick up on anyone, whether at the grocery store, on the street, or at a cosplayer convention.

Observe and pay attention to what's going on around you.
Relate to people based on these things you observe; drop throwaway comments based on whatever is going on. Without expectation of further interaction.
- People will respond in ways that show whether they want more interaction.
Start a conversation if someone responds well to a comment. (If they're hooked.)
Actively listen throughout the interaction. When they're talking, you're not even thinking about what you want to say next because all your brain power is devoted to taking in what they're saying. Because information is power.
When they finish talking, think about what they just said. You'll have good information to follow-up effectively since you've been listening.
Asking about her emotions (how she felt about something) or motivations (why she did something), is something you can do more easily when you're listening. If you can steer the conversation in these directions, things start getting interesting.
Rinse and repeat. This works for girls or guys. If you're really having good conversations, then they will have aspects like what I've described and you simply apply them to talking to anyone. If you're not using these concepts already, then applying them will only help you.

I know personally I like banter. Guys who can tease me and keep up with my wit are instant turn ons. Any guy can come up and tell me Im pretty, so what sets you apart from every other guy at the con? Find your edge and use it.
