It really depends on the situation or rather the severity of his actions. So for something that's not all that offensive and comes off as a a pathetic attempt as an insult, laugh a little, and move on without acknowledging it. However if they cross the line you need to establish boundaries. Once they cross the line it's time you spoke a little more firmly, but don't be a dick. In my experience, crossing the line usually happens after they fail to get a rise out of you for a while. When this happens I'll usually say something along the lines of "Now you've crossed the line. I don't know what your issue is man, but I'm here to have fun, and I'm sure everyone else is here to do the same. So why don't you just chill the fuck out and enjoy yourself. Who knows, you might even like it"

The key is once he crosses the line, not to be all up in his face ready to kick his ass. But you shouldn't admit defeat either. Call them out, make it sound just as petty as it is, then move on.

Non reactive. Stay happy and just ignore it and he will grow exasperated and look petty, while you remain nonchalant.

No idea man. I read somewhere here that said "give them value". I guess what that means is to try to throw them a bone by acknowledging something positive about them.

Well, in school a common scenario would pop up where someone would try to make fun of how bad I am at a certain subject (math for example) while bragging about himself. "How do you fail such a easy test? I haven't got anything under 90% in this course." Personally I would just go "Wow man, you really seem good at this stuff, I heard lots of people failed this time." Then I would switch the conversation back to the girl and talk about something more pleasant. "So anyway, Tom is bringing a few friends from somewhere to karaoke around 7ish I think, if you want to join I'll give you a ride."

Hopefully by then the guy realizes he isn't a part of the conversation and we don't give a rat's ass about him. But if he keeps talking then the girl will just be annoyed of him as well because you are talking to her about something she's excited/cares about while he's just blabbering.

This was dealt a while back, and a great thread ensued, this is the gist:

Being Alpha and being Arrogant are often misunderstood as being one and the same: they are not
When confronted with an ~~Alpha~~ Asshole who makes fun of you, ignore him if you can, or just let it slide and be polite to him.
The women will see through it, and if they don't it means that they are not that smart, they are either bitches or bimbos, and they have met their match in the ~~Alpha Male~~ Asshole who's with them. Move on.
