One of the worst places to try to get laid. There aren't many places to meet girls (they often stay in the house and don't go out at night), there are heavy social penalties for publicly flirting/showing any sign of romantic interest, and most Indians don't dare to date foreigners. Arranged marriages & no sex before marriage is still widespread.
Check out hostel/hotel lobbies and go for backpacker/tourist girls. You'll probably find most of them in Goa.

Don't waste time with Indian chicks. There are lots of challenges with logistics and other things.
Go after the expats and travellers. I don't know if Tinder works in India. It is a good option.

My plan was for each destination during the day for 10 minutes, just swipe right on everyone, and then check up any matches to see if they're actually my type.

Game the traveler girls you meet in the hostels.

Hold up, the whole reason I asked this question was because I wanted to make sure I was sensitive to local culture and practices when I go over there.
If you think she'd be 'humiliated' if she's seen with a guy... isn't that her choice to make?
[–]iamthesage 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Lol In most of India, it is not her choice to make. This is not US or UK. As much as women are smart and want to be independent there is a lot of societal pressure.

The gist I've gotten is that local girls aren't on the cards; so I should stick to expats and tourists?

Yup

I don't know where these people are from but I'm seeing some misinformation in this thread. First of all, as a white guy, you get a free pass with the ladies in lots of places. The important thing to remember that it isn't in all places.
Everything depends on where exactly you're going in India. Big cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore would have plenty of prospects but at the same time, you may not have much luck randomly approaching women on the road.
Upscale bars and clubs have plenty of women looking to get laid. Part of my work is in the nightlife industry so I'm in clubs a lot. The women are there to party and have a good time. Show them what you've got. I'm obviously generalizing when I say this but you can probably treat any woman who drinks or smokes like any other woman from your country. The reason being, up until a few decades or so, women were raised to not smoke, drink or have sex before marriage. These days, there are plenty of women actively trying to break away from that. It's their way of saying "screw outdated social norms, we're modern women who do what we want". This includes fucking like rabbits. I'm not just talking about a handful of women either. There are literally millions. Another indicator is their choice of clothing. Are they dressed traditionally? You might be wasting your time. Are they comfortable wearing revealing clothing? You could probably get away with saying hello... Or more.
Once again it all depends on which part of India you're visiting. Other than big cities, "chilled out" places like Goa, Manali, Pondicherry etc may also have plenty of approachable women. A small, simple town or village? Don't bother. You might even draw the ire of locals.
Be wary of hitting on women with jealous boyfriends though. Also, not many women are comfortable with touching or making out in public but this doesn't mean you can't take them away to some place that's private or at least get a number. PDA does happen, but it's rare even in clubs and definitely not seen in the streets.
Tl;dr treat women in high end places like any other woman in the western world but don't try to make out with them where many people can see you. And don't try picking up women on the street since you aren't used to "the signs".

Thanks for the really informative post; it's exactly what I was hoping for (and then some).
Being a backpacker, I'm keeping it minimalistic on the clothes front (only taking 1 set of smart-ish clothes, a pair of jeans and a shirt, with the rest just t-shirts and shorts). I think therefore that upscale bars and clubs may not be open to me as an option.
This this advice applicable to lower-scale bars and lounges, or do these kinds of places typically have more conservative locals in them?

Well where are you headed? :) I can't say I know much about life outside of big cities.
A general rule of thumb is any place that serves alcohol and has a lot of women is safe ground. In lower end places, you'd mostly find large groups of guys looking to get wasted or older gentlemen nursing their drinks. The dynamics also vary by city. For instance, Bangalore has plenty of bars around every corner, and is known as the "Pub capital of India". You'd find bars across different price ranges but since the city also has many young and single working women, these bars get a good crowd.
On the other hand, Chennai where I live is generally more conservative. Here, women typically frequent only middle to high end bars or clubs, but then again, the numbers can run really high.
From what I know, touristy places like Goa and Pondicherry also have approachable women. Basically, any place where there's a nice party going on with lots of women is cool.
A couple of things to know - If the woman can't speak fluent English, she's probably not the kind you're looking for. "Modern" and open minded Indian women are mostly well educated and speak very good English. Unlike in the west, you're not going to be picking up waitresses or cashiers. These jobs are manned by people from poor families who aren't exposed to western culture, not young college students.
Women who wear bindis (dot on forehead), burkhas, flowers in their hair... don't bother. They're probably from conservative backgrounds. Of course there are exceptions to the rule, but I guess you get my point.
Don't over think it either. Most of the time, you'll just know when you get to a place. Look out for young crowds and western clothing. India is a place with extreme differences in culture and mindsets but also a very beautiful place that is home to many exquisite women. So have fun and stay safe.

My route as it stands can be found here: http://goo.gl/maps/rGxj6
Any critiques on the route would be really appreciated as well haha!
Thanks again for your advice.

Once you're done with that, you'd have seen more of the country than I have so I guess I can't help you there.
If you're interested in visiting big cities, Bangalore would make for a nice detour from Gokarna.

That's not really helpful. Thanks though.
