OP, with regards to the boyfriend comment, you done good. That's exactly what you should do. My comments below are for the reasons why you should do exactly as OP did.

I say never treat the BF/Fiance as a shit test. I'm in a LTR, I've watched dudes aggressively hit on my fiancee, even when I'm in the same group. She's politely told them she's engaged, but because she is very friendly and believes in eye contact and being social, these douchenozzles mistake them for IOI's and press even harder thinking saying something like "What you don't want another?" or "Yah, well I like fishsticks" thinking they are funny and cute.

If a chick tells you she is taken, back the fuck off. If she's lying to you because she doesn't want to be approached, treat that as a IOD. Indicator of disinterest, and move on.

Wherever you see a story of a guy here saying he just plowed through the BF "shit test" with some witty retort and got laid in a back alley, I'll be the guy coughing bullshit.

You don't need to state directly that you think she's cute. If you're using good vocal tonality, squaring up with her (body language), holding eye contact, and chatting with her in a playful and vaguely sexual way, she will know with 100% certainty why you're talking with her. This is how you subcommunicate intent. It's the most confident and natural way to do it.

Telling a girl directly that you think she's cute is generally just an awkward unnecessary comment and kills the natural flow of the interaction. It's possible this is why you're getting those responses. Of course, they might also actually be taken. Either way, let your intent be subcommunicated. Try not to verbalize it as often.

I suggest you consider not trying to pick up at parties, clubs, and bars - at least as your primary hunting grounds. I know that's really hard for the majority of guys to wrap their minds around, but I think this is the biggest mistake young guys make. I mean if that's the extent of your socialization world, I guess that's what you have to work with. But, relatively low quality and low percentage odds compared to almost anywhere else. Unless you are looking for an alcohol skewed encounter ... then, yeah, I guess. So much better quality, and so much easier almost anywhere else. There are women dtf literally everywhere. Grow a big network of private friends that do stuff together. Travel, exercise, common interests, etc.
