Direct = good attraction and sluggish comfort. Indirect = sluggish attraction and good comfort. What gives?

Well indirect vs direct is mainly just about the opener. I almost always use indirect in pretty much every situation. The opener itself is just a "hey" or something situational, and it's not really expected to get her attracted or anything (though it'll help if you're a cool guy, being natural, and if you say something she likes). The attraction part comes in the follow-through and the rest of your interaction.

You'll get friend-zoned if you skimp on attraction and/or focus too much on comfort. I never put much thought into comfort since attraction itself will usually get some results. The opener itself though is pretty irrelevant to me, and IMO at least, it doesn't ever need to be direct unless you're in a situation where you only have a minute to talk. I just feel much more natural when I open with something natural- if I open directly, it's really just a ploy. Realistically, I don't give a shit if I happen to see a hot girl for only a few minutes before she leaves- I know there will be others. So I'm not gonna open her directly and pretend like I'm super interested right off the bat, no matter what the situation is.

I think this is a good observation. The key is not to build comfort, imo, it is to spike attraction. Who gives a shit if you have attraction and no comfort, the chick surely doesn't, you're there to fcuk her not be her best friend. Attraction is the key, and it's spraked almost instantly, just go for that and you can build comfort and report easily, she'll forgive almost anything if she's attracted.
