This is gonna be controversial methinks. Originally, I thought most people thought this way, but doing a quick Google search popped up almost exclusively how being single is awesome and liberating (and is a familiar sentiment by many collegues). Seems like culturally it's more accepted to be single than be married with kids nowadays. Almost like it's some kind of evil patriarchal activity...

Ok...so being single and being a long term batchelor is a boring and unsustainable lifestyle. Why?

  • it's expensive: Fun is derived from partying and drinking. Two very expensive hobbies that only work for a certain set of people. Partying isn't cheap. Drinking out isn't cheap. Eating out isn't cheap. Constantly going to theaters isn't cheap. Living the city batchelor lifestyle is very pricey, sometimes more than taking care of a family if you're frugal and disciplined.

Yes you can do without those things but then there's even LESS to do as a single person.

  • 9/5 is designed for families. Your free time is too early and late to do any solo adventuring.

  • Casual sex is boring. Yeah, you get a lot of experience and there's no commitments, but just having sex is probably the most overrated human activity. If there's no romance or real connection....it's just a fun excercise that also releases some extra hormones and endorphins. Whoopdeefuckingdoo.... Not worth the effort in courting someone...

  • TV and Netflix is boring. It's a horrible waste of time, and most batchelor/single people I know spend way too much f*kin time on the tele while talking up a storm about their freedom (to watch boring escapism).

  • Unless travelling, there's only a limited range of activities within your area. Even within big cities, there's a lack of variety of things to do solo. Mostly derivatives of walking, jogging, drinking, partying. If you DO travel, the solo lifestyle completely makes sense, as you are constantly swapping places to travel towards.

  • Not sharing your life experiences with anyone else. For me, this is a big one. When I travel with others, I love sharing the things I've learned and showing others the things I've seen. I almost feel selfish and hollow by not having anyone to share my life with.

  • Romantic trips can be the most fun with the right person.

  • You can still do solo things once in a while. Yes, you may not have the liberty to randomly go on a cruise ship, but how many of us actually do that?

  • You can still hang out with friends once in a while. Yes, not all the time, but hanging out can get old quickly. Itll make those days you do hang out all that more special.

  • You can still have hobbies. You might have a bit less time for it, but subtract all those times you go out pointlessly or Not only that, but you now have a person (or little people if you have kids) to share and even help you out.

  • You now can shape and mold a new life to your direction. Obviously, this is the most controversial point of them all.

Obviously this doesn't work for everyone (even most people). Just seeing lately there's a stigma for people who choose to not be batchelors and go straight to the family phase, when there's obvious advantages and disadvantages to both. Not every lifestyle works for everyone. Some people prefer the old school...

What you guys think?
