i usually just reply confidently with "thank you" whenever someone mentions something like this ( i dont have dreads btw) unless i can come up with a witty line in a split second on the spot, which is usually never. your problem with delivery might be because its already in your head that that is your "line" and it sounds forced. i used to have pre prepared lines for certain things people would say and they never worked because my delivery wasn't authentic. saying thank you either throws them off if they were trying to insult you, and basically halts any attempt of mocking you and if they were genuinely curious or think they are cool then they'll think you are confident because you are proud of it and can accept a compliment
