Obviously depends how much work you want to put into it. I like to keep a moderately stocked bar to make cocktails of the older variety because I like them more than for women, so the alcohols I keep are:

gin (bombay sapphire level) => gin n tonic, martini, tom collins, gimlet
bourbon (makers mark) => manhattan or whisky sour
vodka (smirnoff's ok) => vodka tonic, cosmopolitan, kamikazi shots, vodka martini
rum => daiquiri - I don't really keep rum actually

And the accoutrements you'll need:

vermouth (sweet and dry) (don't skimp on this too much, you can have it on it's own chilled and is a huge factor in the taste of a martini/manhattan)
triple sec
simple syrup (mix a cup of sugar with a cup of water on low heat - keeps forever)
cranberry juice (only for cosmos/vodka cranberry's)
lemons + lemon squeezer/presqueezed lemon juice (you really can't use store bought lemon juice for cocktails - it won't taste good)
tonic and soda water
ICE - very important for most mixed drinks
