Dude, don't. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selection_bias
[–]WikiTextBot 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Selection bias is the bias introduced by the selection of individuals, groups or data for analysis in such a way that proper randomization is not achieved, thereby ensuring that the sample obtained is not representative of the population intended to be analyzed. It is sometimes referred to as the selection effect. The phrase "selection bias" most often refers to the distortion of a statistical analysis, resulting from the method of collecting samples. If the selection bias is not taken into account, then some conclusions of the study may not be accurate.

Yeah fair point. I guess the average female reddit user probably isn't a good representation of 18-20 year old girls at the mall.
[–]vulgrrr 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I was thinking more that you're reading thread where women who had bad experiences with men are sharing their experiences. Of course they are less receptive to being approached rather than women who never had this kind of experiences.
[–]401_Kay 9 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link
Yeah you're probably right.
I just read shit like:
My little sister started dressing as the stereotypical butch lesbian when she went off to college. Said that it made things a little easier.
Apparently there are girls out there who hate being approached that fucking much. And here I am planning to start approaching girls at college. That made me feel like a dick.
I don't know. Like a few hours ago I was watching some infield vids of dudes crushing it in daygame, and the girls are having a great time. And then I go and read this shit and it made me second guess myself. You can understand what i'm saying, right?
I guess I was being naive. I have no trouble approaching women in social environments like bars and clubs and shit. Maybe I should just stick to that.

Infield vids are also subject to selection bias: you're not going to see the girls who are bothered or scared by the approach.

I'll be honest with you. Your issue lies 100% in your lack of confidence. You need to work on that and other pieces will fall in place naturally.
[–]Xanarxses 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well that's putting it lightly.
If I went to the mall and asked them. I think I'd come up with 0 answers that were "Yeah I totally know what reddit is. I go there all the time."

Why do you care about this ? There will always be girls that don't like being approached, and then they will complain about not being approached and how noone finds them attractive. This is the way women think...
[–]401_Kay 9 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link
I don't care if some girls don't like being approached. But if most women genuinely don't enjoy being approached then I wouldn't want to do it.

most women
Most women are not complaining on reddit about their issues with men approaching them. Reddit can't be used as an accurate representation of all women's opinion on the matter.
Matter of fact, I'm not even sure if anything could...

Girl here and I like being approached, even if I'm not attracted to the guy. I know it takes guts and I appreciate the effort, plus it's a compliment to me.
You'll always find girls who are receptive or who aren't. Same thing whether it's day game or night game. I'd only suggest picking appropriate "targets". If a woman is wearing headphones, maybe don't disturb her. If you're at the gym, etc.
Otherwise if she looms receptive to being approached, go for it. Worse case scenario she turns you down. If she gets all pissy and annoyed, that reflects on her. No reason to get so angry if someone simply talks to you (assuming you're not being overly agressive).
That's very reassuring to hear, thanks.
A lot of PUA dudes seem to suggest approaching even if the girl is wearing headphones or at the gym, or even in a rush etc. But that seems crazy to me.
[–]Ihatemost 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I don't think it's crazy. We're a very individualistic society though. People don't talk to each other often just for a conversation, there's always an end goal. So these women who are bothered by approaches might be wary because they think the guy approaching wants something out of them. It might be why some are very quick to say they have a boyfriend.
Women who are more receptive will just take the approach at face value and enjoy an unexpected conversation. So oftentimes they wouldn't be bothered as much if it's in a gym or other. Since it's probably not the majority, that's mostly why I don't recommend it. In the end, I think if you're engaging, respectful and not making the woman uncomfortable somehow, you shouldn't care about how they potentially react and just approach because you want to.

Don't ask the fish on how they want to be caught. Ask the fishermen. I love this quote from this sub.
[–]401_Kay 9 years ago [recovered] (4 children) | Copy Link
Well that metaphor basically sums up my concern here. Ideally when you talk to a girl you are sharing value with her and improving her life. Whereas a fisherman literally kills and eats fish. I don't want to give a girl a negative experience.

You sound like someone from r/niceguys
Yeah i know what you mean. I sound like a pussy right now soz.
I'm just trying to justify approaching in my head. Like if most women genuinely didn't enjoy being approached, wouldn't you have to be some kind of sociopath to still do it?
[–]digitalbitch 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I had this discussion with some girls a few months back. They were actually lamenting the fact that no one approaches them in the bar anymore. Be careful not to read too much into what people say on the internet. Rather experience it yourself in real life. If it looks like women are uncomfortable with you approaching or if you don't like it, then don't do it. But don't use it as an excuse not to try.
[–]401_Kay1 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Bars are a social environment, so I don't mind approaching girls there. I'm more concerned with non-social scenarios. What you said about experiencing things yourself is good advice though, thank you.

Approach women in bars, clubs, meet ups, events, group activities, etc. Just don't do it at funerals or on subways man. If they turn you down, move on, don't corner them and don't keep pushing.

First, as vulgrrr stated, selection bias is in full effect on that AskReddit thread. People who don't feel concerned by the topic won't reply, which takes a huge chunk out of what we would consider an objective sample. People who have had issues/awful experiences will be the most vocal and vehement, and there aren't just about a dozen of those on this planet. This will make it all sound like a widespread issue if you don't take into account the proportion of people who never had to deal with such issues.
Furthermore, each individual is unique, with his/her unique life context. However, that's not taken into account. If you strip the "right data" out of your potential sample, you can make it say whatever you want to fit one's agenda.
Have you noticed how negative comments and stories, regardless of the topic at hand, far outweight the good ones, not only on the internet, but in the media as well? People will mostly speak out when outraged, so of course the thread appears to display an awful problematic, when in fact it showcases the bad experiences specific people had to go through.
Not taking anything away from these bad experiences, but given how we tend to communicate as a species, we'll always hear more bad than good, even in cases when actual good experiences outweights the bad ones. That's why a single bad review on a product can potentially cause a whole lot of damage to that product's sales.
