Before I start my field report, I just want to thank you seddit. I've been getting a lot of positive feedback and responses, which are more helpful than you can imagine. I've even received a few PM's about my challenge. I owe my success to all of you, posters and lurkers alike!
Girl 1
I approached this girl at a bus stop. I asked her where she was headed (the answer being to the same place I was), and from there I asked her about her major, why she chose it, and such. I teased her a bit, and kept the conversation rolling pretty well. Unfortunately, we missed our bus, and there was some awkward silence until the next bus came a few minutes later. I almost didn't get her number, since we were in a group of people, and I was trying to avoid awkwardness.
Fast forward to a few hours ago, and I found out the number given to me was the wrong one. Suffice to say, I don't think she was too interested in me.
Girl 2
I approached this girl in the lounge of my dorm. She was sitting in a group of people, with a friend of mine who I had recently met. I invited myself into the group, and was able to get her attention. After some light flirting, I left her side, and started talking to another female friend of mine, returning a bit later to continue talking to Lounge-girl. This was a much easier conversation to carry, and there was quite a bit of teasing on both ends. I asked for her number, and left for my room shortly afterwards.
Side notes
I got the number from a girl who I approached before this challenge started, but I recently received a text saying she was looking to adjust into college life before anything. Another text from yesterday's introverted math girl yielded a no, as she has a boyfriend. Most of the girls I approach in public places (such as the bus) don't respond to my texts, but the ones from my classes usually do.
This leads me to believe that I'm not building enough social comfort for her to text me back, let alone go out with me. For those who do text back, they seem to get the idea that I'm approaching them as a friend. This is a problem I'm going to have to fix.
Self-analysis/tl;dr
One of my biggest problems is holding a conversation. Often times, the conversation dies, and there are awkward pauses. While I've incorporated eye contact more into my approaches, this alone is not enough to save these conversations. I'm also coming off as too friendly.
Anyway, thanks for reading, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
