This is a short FR but this is my very first time in the field. Today I conquered my first AA, and although it was nothing spectacular and WAS awkward (I made it that way), it ended in me getting her number.

For the past week I've been telling myself to finally approach one girl. Just one. That was my goal to finally work out of my AA. I'm not an awkward guy by any means and can hold conversations, but when it comes to women, I've always been more of a friends kinda guy. I never sought them out, and as a result they had no interest in me either. I wanted to change that.

So I just got out of the gym, and I was walking away when I see a student at the desk. ( I work out at a uni gym.) I saw her on the way in, and the entire workout I decided she was the one I'd break the mold with, no matter what came out of it. I was ready for rejection or success.

So I approached. "Hey, I have to start heading out, but you're really cute, so would I be able to get your number so we can talk later?" Short and to the point. She smiles, tells me "Sorry, I actually have a boyfriend." This is where I was stupid: "Well we can still be friends." She looks confused as she reaches for my phone but smiles, and gives me her name, last name, and number in my contacts. We both say it was nice to meet each other, and I head out.

Now I should have reacted better, but my nerves were a little shot from the whole approach. It took a lot of bravery, so when I heard the classic shit test, whether real or not, I forgot any plan I could have thought of. But now I have the experience from it all, and I can react better the next time it happens.

I texted her an hour or so later with: "Hey, good meeting you today. Hope to see you again, unless your boyfriend wants to beat me up ;)" trying to lighten it up. Unsure if I could have said anything better.

Either way, just remember to always have a back up plan. Don't necessarily make a plan, but learn to react in clever ways to avoid awkward situations. And for the newbies like me, we have a long road, but we can get through it.
