I have worked in retail for about a year while in college and this is something i just haven't learned yet. Where does the pickup fall in the retail environment? Let's start with the two roles in question:

The Worker our job is to man the register, stock product, be friendly, and sell. Typically at my job I am behind a register or working the floor solo. Once in a while I have a nice girl my age and we talk a little but I always feel there is a professional boundary between me. Like she just takes it as the sales guy being friendly (which It may start off as) and then I have my job on the line. What if they get offended if i say ask for a number? What if they call my manager about it? What if they tell people "oh don't go there the guy will hit on you." Where does the pickup play in the role of the worker?

The Customer Now I have worked along side girls a lot in retail and have witnessed MANY attempts at pickup and 0 of them have been successful. Now granted none of these guys were doing anything right aside from taking the first step, all very creepy and awkward but what is the right way to do it without making the person feel uncomfortable? For instance girl at the checkout counter I always see remembers my name. Maybe I want to ask her out or get her number. What do I do to not make that weird? Should I go to a place I frequent regularly or that I have never and will never have to go into again, in case all else fails? I have also personally been handed a few numbers by the person when I'm working the register without any flirting or following up just "here's my number bye" which is actually a pretty good way to do it in my eyes. Just go in and say "hey you're cute" hands number and leaves but I don't think that would actually work.
