People’s anecdotes and generalizations tend to skew towards the fringes on this topic because we tend to surround ourselves with like-minded people.
Studies seem to suggest that only about 50% of women would only date men taller than them no matter what. The majority of the remainder want a guy at least the same height or not much shorter, and a very small minority want shorter men specifically.
Women in general are socially conditioned to seek safety and comfort in men because our society makes them feel vulnerable, so it seems to makes sense many would prefer a taller guy. In the modern world, a woman’s SO is by far the most likely person to commit violence against her or murder her, so this way of thinking that feels very natural probably makes them less safe in reality. Then again, feeling safe could be more important to them than their statistical risk profile. Fair enough.
Having a tall bf is also a picture perfect status symbol for some, regardless of whether they want to feel safe. They tend to want men who are not just taller than them but tall relative to other available men. To these people, being with a guy of even average height can seem like “settling” or having low standards. Luckily this is also a very small minority of women.
The moral of the story is that while height is a major factor for many women, there are also many women for whom it’s probably not going to be an issue unless the guy makes it an issue.

Great observations, a lot of this I have witnessed in my own circle of friends. I still tend to think it is much more of a barrier in the online dating sector than in in-person dating or approaching women. And I very much agree, it likely is not an issue unless they make it one :)

I was mostly just sharing (mostly) objective analysis, but if I had a point it would be that there’s someone for everyone, mostly because so many women are on the shorter end of the spectrum.
Any decent guy, even if they’re short, can pretty easily find a good woman for a LTR if that’s what they’re after.
If they want to be a big time player OTOH and have the hottest girls chasing them...they better be rich and/or charismatic af. They don’t have conspicuous dominance built in, so they have to really dominate life to have a chance at that. May not be fair but that’s the way of it. I think you’re getting downvoted because you’re not acknowledging that last bit.

Lol only HALF of all women want to exclusively date taller men? And that's evidence that women don't care that much about height? Imagine a study that found that 50% of men would only date women with boobs bigger than the average cup size. Would you go out of your way to cite that as evidence that "men don't really care that much about breast size?"
I don't personally really care what the preference is. There's no negotiating it. I'm 5'10" so it's not been a major roadblock in my experience. But what is with this constant effort to minimize how important this characteristic is or to insist that women's tastes are not somewhat irrational?
No one literally thinks all women will only be attracted to NBA players, but clearly a guy who is 5'6" has a massive disadvantage. Can we at least acknowledge that?
because our society makes them feel vulnerable
Also, baloney. Our society empowers women more than most cultures in human history. If you are phsyically weaker and smaller, you will be more vulnerable by definition. This has nothing to do with "society."

You must’ve stopped reading right there and totally skipped my follow-up comment because you totally missed my point. I’m a very short dude myself who has been pretty successful with women but also been shot down more times than I could count.
I’ve also ignored cute girls who were into me because I had oneitis for ones who wouldn’t date me no matter what because of my height. Don’t preach to me about the struggle. I’m in the choir.

Yeah, I didn't read your other comments. I read the comment that I responded to. I think it should stand on its own.
I disagreed with two key quotes from that comment. Do you not stand by those quotes then? Whether or not you said the direct opposite in any follow-up comments, you still made those specific claims in that comment. A 50% preference for height is high. And our "society" does not "make" women vulnerable. Either you stand by the statements I was critiquing there or you don't.

I don't care one bit what you think about my comment that has 20 net upvotes on a post that's been deleted since yesterday. You're clearly in the minority here and when I say you completely misunderstood my point, that's not hyperbole. You don't even seem to understand that I was tactfully disagreeing with the OP.
You're doing unhinged mental gymnastics to fight with me when I agree with your general (subjective) assertion that too many women care too much about height. You're projecting the OP's argument onto me and completely disregarding the final paragraph (of the same comment that you're trying to take me to court over) where I explicitly acknowledge that many women are hung up on height. 50% is a lot. My comment was meant to encourage short men despite the adversity they obviously face.
I will say that you got the point of my comment about women feeling vulnerable. You must not understand the female experience at all if you think growing up in this world does not make them feel vulnerable. That's not even debatable. Vulnerability is especially integral to the female experience the world over and has been all throughout human history. Things being a bit better for them in recent years doesn't change that.

my comment that has 20 net upvotes
Is this a flex? Pretty unimpressive.
You don't even seem to understand that I was tactfully disagreeing with the OP.
I got that. And I was pointing out that the 50% finding does not indicate women care little for height. Just look at what I wrote. I didn't miss anything. I read your overall point. I was simply addressing a specific error (imo) in that comment. You can choose to not respond to that if you like, but to assume I must be "missing the point" or that my being "in the minority" means anything at all, is just deflection.
50% is a lot.
Regardless of the way you summarized your argument further on, that was not the implication I got from the way you initially phrased that statistic. That was my major point of disagreement. Because it sounded as though you were saying that was not a lot. And your encouraging tone throughout the comment seemed to confirm that.
You must not understand the female experience at all if you think growing up in this world does not make them feel vulnerable.
I'm sure it does. My disagreement is with your assertion that "our society" is the cause. Again, "our society" is one of the most safe and enabling for women in human history. The residual vulnerability they may feel is mostly due to biology (being smaller and weaker) and is therefore, largely unavoidable. Only by presuming that life should or could be literally perfect for every person, would we make the error in thinking that our current society is significantly dangerous for women. Compared to many other societies, past and present, it is not.
(I say that last part with the caveat that I actually think our looser sexual morals and greater tolerance for promiscuity are probably not ideal for women. This would be counterintuitive to someone with a liberal view of ethics and of recent history.)

Easy to simmer down when you’re taller I’m just saying, I’m not even too mad about that.

Im 5'7 and couldn't give a rats arse if any shallow female thinks im not tall enough.
[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
I truly truly do not think most women care much about height.
They do, but won't admit it out of fear of appearing shallow. That said, absolutely nothing wrong with having the preference. As guys, we have preferences for boob/butt size and weight, so it would be hypocritical to bash women for wanting a certain height.
[–]Linkinsuave 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Exactly why I wouldn’t take things personal because I understand that I have preferences too. It is only normal for others to have them and for you to respect that.
[–]SadKnight123 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Women at least can have some implants on their boobs and workout their butts... a man can't increase his height, dick size and other attributes a lot of women value, for example.
[+]mn_bbyy -6 points-5 points-4 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Agreed, nothing wrong at all with preference, I only mean that it isn't as huge of a barrier as a lot of guys seem to feel it is.
[–]Bo0mh3adsh0t 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I would say height is actually one of the biggest barriers women can put in place when choosing a potential partner. You would be amazed how often I hear women talk about not dating anyone smaller than them or shorter than 6ft etc.
[–]mn_bbyy -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
My friends and I have conversations like this often. While I agree, tons of girls do swipe according to height or what have you, in an actual conversation or run-in in the real world, height has muuuuch less to do with being charmed than many people think :) At least for the women i know.
[–]timsmth2022 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It also doesn’t help the fact that peoples perception of how tall someone is by looking at them is way off. I’m 6’3 and I can’t tell you how many times people (male and female) ask me if I’m like 6’8. I recognize that I am tall, but I would look like a midget next to a real 6’8 man like Lebron James.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
For hookups, it is absolutely one of the most important aspects. LTR's offer more wiggle room.
[–]mxablev2 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I appreciate your positive perspective and it does feel nice to hear that all women arent as concerned about height. Im 5'4 and the hard truth is that height matters to some women A lot , at least in my experiences. I learned that at an early age, mostly from school. I've had a good amount of relationships and height has been the topic in all of them. Didn't matter if they were taller or shorter than me. I never cared about being short lol, but its like the first thing people always say about me. My most recent ex would bring up height constantly. One of the last things she said to me was that I was the "right" guy for her in every way, its just my height. Cannot make this shit up lol. Now obviously there could be more as to why she broke up with me but thats what I was told. It just seems weird that height is such a big topic. Believe me, women will make that shit known.

As a 6’3 male this is bullshit in my opinion. This is the same thing as if you ask 100 men on camera if they would date a obese women. Maybe 70% of them say yes on camera? But we all know only 30% would say yes off the camera. I’m sorry I just do not believe women don’t care, and I wish they did. I have never ever ever ever ever advertised my height online. Obviously in real life I can not hide my height. But on the internet I don’t tell anyone unless they specifically ask. I’m personally not a fan of all the lying going in society as the fear of being cancelled. Most women want a tall, shredded dude (only talking about physical features here). And most men want a beautiful women, with nice tits and nice ass, and that is just the facts.
Editing my comment to add this. In MY opinion, females on the taller side like yourself are less concerned about height. As your selection pool of men that are taller than you is quite small. I think the height Preferences by females come from the shorter side of women. Which in a way is interesting to ME. I dated a girl that was 5’3 a couple years ago, it was very weird for me, I felt like I was holding hands with my niece (honestly). It gets to a point that if I’m just that much taller than my partner it’s uncomfortable for me. I prefer taller women honestly, which is interesting because most men feel differently from what I gathered. God I’m sorry, I am drunk and added no value to this discussion.
[–]mn_bbyy 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, you’re definitely right about the context in which women are being asked/responding. Height is definitely a factor for a lot of women, I’m just not sure it’s as huge a factor in ltr or meeting someone organically as it sometimes seems

My boyfriend is a wee bit shorter than me, I have always been a high heel kind of girl when I go out and that hasn’t changed ; ) in fact I remember wearing high heels on our first date 8 months ago and when I answered the door abd saw that I was at least a good 5 inches taller than him I said “maybe I should put on my converse instead” he then said something along the lines of I insist you don’t because those heels look amazing. It’s all about the confidence of the fella

I think that's a great mindset to have, as a female or male so I will applaud you for that op, whatever online reddit applause is worth.
Many good points have alread been brought up but I'll add to the convo just to put things in perspective.
Like said before, a good majority of women are looking for a man who's similar height or a bit taller. There's prob a good portion of women who actively seek taller men, someone who is 6ft and taller, however online studies suggest, that as these women get older, they tend to lower that standard of height. Why?
The U.S avg of men over 6 ft is i think around 15 percent of the population. Women (and men) begin to learn as they get older, that it is MUCH harder to find potential partners when limiting yourself to 15 percent of the population. Sure you might be able to find a 6ft guy, but is he attractive? Is he successfu? Do you share the same life values? Does he want kids? Is he religious? Political views? blah blah. The list goes on. Ppl begin to shorten their list of criteria for potential partners. This isnt seen as lowering of standards either. This is seen as honing in on whats really important to you.
Another point to add for my short kinds out there (I am 5.8 myself). Is that height is relative. 5.8 is tall in south america. 5.10 is short in the netherlands. 5.5 is avg in some parts of Asia. The world's a big place.
Finally theres actually been a study as well, on the habits of very successful men dating much taller women. (Tom Cruise, John Legend etc etc) Is dating a taller women slowly becoming seen as a proponent of success? Some ppl think yes, which has the reverse effects as well. Taller women are seen as more beautiful when with smaller men. Small study but its worth noting.
End of the day dating is about numbers, and the chances of you not meeting someone who will like you for you who you are in this day and age is low. But worrying about something as trivial as height, race or eye colour. Is stupid.

If you are 5’9 height is NOT a factor to your success or lack of it
