So this post has nothing to do with picking up women.
I was recently hired as a summer intern doing software development for a company near my university. It's a fairly big company, probably almost a thousand in the building, but the team I work with has 25 people in a big open room.
Since I was hired last week, I've mostly been quiet, working on whatever the last thing my boss asked me to do was, occasionally asking quick questions when I get stuck on something.
But I feel beta as hell at work. Everyone in the room is significantly smarter than me, more comfortable than me, more experienced, and I assume that they're all working on stuff that is more important than talking to me.
Additionally, everyone is way older than me which makes it hard to speak with them as I would a peer.
I'd like to fit in and actually be able to have a personality while I work here, but I don't want to step on anyone's toes or come off as dumb or annoying.
Any advice for the new guy?
