You don't get to pick and choose what's considered good advice. The issue is that you're inherently viewing a neutral gesture as a creepy thing. If you stop viewing it as creepy (and obviously apply some basic social intelligence), then it won't be creepy. So if you don't want to be creepy, you need to not make it creepy.

Leaning in isn't inherently creepy. It's the implementation that makes it creepy.

You can use all the coolest techniques but if you're inherently coming from the wrong place, that shit won't matter.

ALRIGHT IM ABOUT TO REVEAL TO YOU THE GREATEST TRICK IN THE WORLD FOR BREAKING THE TOUCH BARRIER.

When you two are walking thru a doorway, open the door for her and guide her through (gently dont actually push her thru. just put hand on lower back -make sure its lower back- and kind of hold it there and apply enough force to move an egg on a table without risking breaking it) This my friend is the smoothest way to break the touch barrier and you will instantly know how she feels about you when you do this. -(only girls who really dont like you will be bothered by this-except for rare souls who have serious touching issues "never met them myself but i suppose they exist")

The thing that usually works for me is to not create that space in the first place.

It obviously is awkward if you're leaning closer randomly at school (whereas at a bar or club it would be less awkward.) When you greet her with a kiss on the cheek you just keep the distance to a minimum and act all normal about it, you don't even mention it. If things seem normal, she really won't mind it - as long as you're charming enough.

If she does mind however, she's probably not that into you.

You make it less awkward by truly accepting that you want to do it. That's my universal answer for all escalation awkwardness dilemmas.
