Start with history. Just learn a timeline for some events - stages of the industrial revolution, eras in art etc. At the very least you will be able to relate eras, and you will inevitably pick up tidbits of specifics. The great part is you will eventually notice corollaries between disparate events which leads to interesting conversation. Also, if you are looking into the industrial revolution, that might lead you to understand how a steam engine works. Pick one thing to start with and go from there.

Live it up and try new things. Walk out the door each day and try to figure out something that catches your eye. Go to a bookstore or the library. Even the shitty ones will have stuff waiting to be found. The worst library in the state (to me) is where I found my personal favorite edition of The Art of War. Once you've found something you're really interested in, it's going to spiral out of control and you will actively pursue all possible information on it and try to wedge it into anything you do. Open yourself up to new experiences and let them take you in, passion will follow.

It's really simple. Get a newspaper or periodical, a good one, not something cheesy like USA Today. Read it front to back every day for one year. What I've found is that it's impossible to recall stuff from only reading something once. With a newspaper, they continue writing about particular stories for several days after the story breaks out. Secondly, reading the newspaper "forces" you to be exposed to things that you normally wouldn't google or wikipedia on your own. Reading on the internet only gives you more knowledge about stuff you already know exists. What about the stuff you don't know exists? I highly recommend this to build up general knowledge fairly quickly and effortlessly. If you want depth on any subject that you come across, they'll almost always cite another book or resource where you can find more information.

In my opinion it comes down to doing what you want to do. Whatever hobby you've got, enjoy it. Outside school/work, when you get home, complete the tasks that have to be completed before the next day. And then the hobbies. Thats for the first part. For the second part, use your daily time for receiving info. If the TV is playing on the background, pass the "Jersey Shore" and tune in on Discovery or National Geographic. While commuting listen to 'smart' radio stations or audiobooks. Read the culture and science extras in newspapers or magazines. And if you get used to it, you WILL know something about almost everything.

Here's what I do. I'll be chillaxin, when suddenly I hear/see/think of something that I think would be cool to know. Then I go and research the shit out of it until I've reached my hearts content.

Also watch documentaries you haven't seen yet, read books that appeal to you, and talk with other people that know more about whatever it is you are interested in than you do.
