How do I start a conversation?

In your situation: "hey, i know you from <club>. What's going on?" and sit down next to/across from her.

In all other situations where you know the girl superficially: "hey, are you/do you/have you/ were you <however you know her>?" <answer> "Oh cool, how've you been?" and sit down/stay around her.

If you don't know her: "Hey interesting lady, what's going on?" And sit down/stand near her

Talk to her like you would with any other person. She's just a girl, man. The very worst that can happen is she isn't into you and you have to find someone else. Not a big deal.

The key is to actually lean back and be relaxed. Almost like you're sitting there waiting for something and choosing to entertain yourself in the meantime. You need the mindstate that that is something totally normal that you would do purely for your own entertainment, not because are trying to get anything other than self entertainment.

Once you embody this and practice it, it will become natural to entertain yourself in moments like this by engaging those around you.

I'd say "What, did your teacher give you a timeout? no really, why are you sitting in the hall?"

If you saw her at the club, even if she didn't see you, that's already a tie. I'm not hugely good at cold-calling, but if you have that initial point to talk about then you're free to make contact :)
