How do you avoid looking desperate when doing a cold approach?

I want to cold approach women but I can’t figure out how to do this without looking desperate. To me it just seems to look like such a desperate act to walk up to a random girl engaged in her own business and start a conversation. Since women hate desperation and neediness more than anything, I’m wondering how people who do regular cold approaches get around this. Thanks.
