They matter, but not nearly as much as other things. I have several exes who aren't conventionally attractive (like 3s or 4s) but they were really funny or social or intelligent or they just treated me really well. There was generally something physical I liked about them. Their eyes or lips or arms or whatever. My husband is like a 7, I'm an 8.5 according to him. When we first met, I thought he was cute but was not interested in dating at all at the time. Our friends tricked me into a double date with him and he won me over, though.

There are a number of different attributes that women find attractive in men. Looks are one. Provider ability is another. Social dominance another. I think there's a full list in the Mystery Method. A man's total value is the sum of all these attributes, and generally it's total value that counts. So yes, an ugly man can have such high value in other areas that his looks don't matter.

You also have to remember that different women weight different attributes differently. So a 20 year old girl looking for fun may well weight looks very highly and almost completely disregard provider status, and the reverse may be true of a 31 yr old woman looking to settle down. Also think of eastern europe where provider / protectors who have little in the way of looks and charisma are very highly valued compared to in the west.

The one advantage that looks have is that they have an instant effect. With other forms of value the girl needs to get to know you before she sees the value (if a girl doesn't see it, it doesn't help you). If you're very good looking she knows you're high value before you even open your mouth. With other traits you need to be able to talk to her long enough for her to see the traits. This is part of the reason guys who work purely on good looks tend to get very fast pulls in clubs.

they're very important, but they get less important as you go for older girls. Them girls might be more impressed if you're rich, whereas young girls might not care if you are the biggest loser in the whole world, as long as you have a gorgeous face. Certainly for one night stands. Maybe less so for an actual relationship

Good looks pretty much only come into play if your wanting a girl to open you for no reason. Attraction is like 50% personality 25% social status (job, money, friends, car) 25% looks. And for women looks are usually used as a deterrent rather than a selling point. Like if you look average or good their reaction probably wont change between the two much, but if your physically unattractive then the reaction is usually im not interested in him specifically because I find something about him unattractive. That being said it usually doesn't matter.

TL;DR - Assuming you not a literal walking trash can.... No not really
