How do you guys approach girls on instagram?

Usually I either respond to a story and try to break the ice talking about the story in particular, or sometimes I just message her saying hello and try from there. But these tend to work better if you have already done small gestures to signal to each other, like liking stories or you met and chatted a bunch in person.

However, there are the girls where you had one or two small interaction, and don't really have anything to talk with her about since you don't know each other very well, and maybe also haven't met in a while. You don't really know if she is interested, but you still wanna approach cuz you are interested. What to do? And what to say?

Sometimes I like being honest, and just saying that I messaged her cuz I was interested, but something tells me that I won't work. Feels a bit like cold approaching, but instead you do know each other and have chatted once or twice.
