Its always ok. In fact more than ok. It's a fucking privilege for them that you (regardless of gender) approach and have the balls to ask first.

A Successful exchange depends on what type of guys you want to approach. Just know that guys aren't usually that used to it and the ones that are probably have high standards. So maybe keep that in mind.

You should also bare in mind that it's more than probable that the guys you're aiming for are really the far opposite from pua's. You might come off as intimidating and they might also simply exchange numbers just to be polite. This is not bad tho. It just means you get a head start.

Fuck it, just do it. Normally I rather I approached, but I'm pretty sure that's because I enjoy the challenge of it. I've had a women approach me a few times and it's quite refreshing. It's nice to know, as a guy, that you're noticed just for looking attractive.

A lot of people are recommending you ask, but I think that's an oversimplification. If you ask for his number, you're completely reversing the gender roles, and you end up with the number.

Better: "You're cute. Why don't you take my number."

I'm more of a shy, smart, nerd type myself. INTJ Actually. I'm not huge into the PUA thing, but even occasionally browsing this subreddit has been fairly informative.

However, to answer your question, I can only speak for myself, but I know that I'm not the most attractive or confident guy in the room, and generally these are the traits that are preferred by girls, so if you spent your first sentence addressed to me on asking for my number, I'd be confused and off-put. I'd prefer we spoke about our hobbies and interests first, because then at least I know that we can have conversations of substance, and you won't be one of those people that forces me to endure small talk.
